If it's bird flu...we'll probably never hear the truth.

A preliminary report from experts dispatched to the island of Great Inagua to investigate the death of flamingos and other migratory birds this week stated there were fewer dead birds than first thought and that they did not seem to have died of bird flu, the national park director said.

No Indication of Bird Flu Found in the Bahamas
Friday March 3, 2:08 pm ET
NASSAU, Bahamas, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Senior Veterinary Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources reports that final findings indicate that a total of ten birds were involved in the reported incident on the island of Inagua. All the carcasses were in an advanced state of decomposition therefore no definite diagnosis could be made and no useful samples of internal organs could be recovered for testing.
Physical evidence indicated that the likely causes of death may have been due to trauma. Reports on the island indicate that some hunting is taking place for migratory ducks in the area where the carcasses were found.
There were no new reports of mortality or illness in either wild or domesticated birds on Inagua.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources will continue to investigate all reports of unexplained bird mortality throughout The Bahamas.

Re: Bahamas Officials: Birds Didn't Die of Flu
First they say that there was not enough evidence to do testing:
"All the carcasses were in an advanced state of decomposition therefore no definite diagnosis could be made and no useful samples of internal organs could be recovered for testing. "
Then they go on the say that they died of trauma:
"Physical evidence indicated that the likely causes of death may have been due to trauma."
No wait, maybe it was hunting:
"Reports on the island indicate that some hunting is taking place for migratory ducks in the area where the carcasses were found."
Actually nevermind, it was all a mistake, there are no new dead birds.
"There were no new reports of mortality or illness in either wild or domesticated birds on Inagua."
This report is a perfect example of misinformation.Last edited by DB; March 3, 2006, 04:13 PM.

Officials in Bahamas rule out bird flu
NASSAU, Bahamas, March 4 (UPI) -- Officials in the Bahamas said 10 birds that some believed to have died from bird flu could not be tested for the virus.
All the carcasses were in an advanced state of decomposition, so no definitive diagnosis could be made and no useful samples of internal organs could be recovered for testing.
Physical evidence indicated the likely causes of death may have been trauma, said a senior veterinary officer of the Ministry of Agriculture.
There have been reports of hunting for migratory ducks taking place in the area where the carcasses were found.
There have been no new reports of mortality or illness in either wild or domesticated birds on the island of Inagua.

Re: Bahamas Officials: Birds Didn't Die of Flu
This story keeps changing every day.
Now the excuse is that the birds cannot be tested because they are decomposed. Therefore, there is no bird flu.
What moron thought up this public communications strategy?
This is the anagolous to the US Governments "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy regarding homosexuals in the military.
Except in this case the motto is "If you don't test, it doesn't exist".
Ok all you high school juniors, here is the SAT question.
"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" means there are Homosexuals in the military just as "If you don't test, it doesn't exist" means there is:
a) Bird Flu in homosexuals
b) Homosexuals in the military
c) Bird Flu in the Bahamas
d) Pastrami on rye with Cole slaw and Thousand Island Dressing
The choice is yours......
Great, now I am hungry.

Re: Bahamas Officials: Birds Didn't Die of Flu
You remember the Minister of Misinformation in Panama saying that all the monkey, pig, cattle and burro deaths were due to the rain? The animals got cold and wet in the tropics and forgot to eat and they all died.
Costa Rica used the same excuse when most of the animals suddenly died in their country. It was the rain. Animals and Birds can't remember to eat and they all die. I have yet to see the pig that has forgotten to eat just because the mud puddles are so alluring.
Oh well, whatever was killing the animals in Columbia and Central America is now in Mexico. Things should get interesting in the next few weeks. Mexico claims that it is H5N2. I am not convinced.
