Russia's chief doctor calls for extermination of crows in cities

    14:35 | 14/ 03/ 2006

"Crows are feathered wolves and should be exterminated mercilessly," Gennady Onishchenko said.

MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's chief doctor Tuesday sounded a dire warning over the country's crows, which he said are potential carriers of bird flu.

"Crows are feathered wolves and should be exterminated mercilessly," Gennady Onishchenko said.

He also said wild birds should be driven away from nesting grounds near cities and poultry farms.

In February 2006, a wave of bird flu hit nine regions in Russia and killed over a million birds. No human cases have been registered in the country.

Will people begin to poision crows then? How will they be able to tell the difference between a poisioned crow and an H5N1 positive crow?
