Columbian health authorities on Monday reported a second outbreak of the hanta virus in Necocli, a town in the northeastern department of Antioquia, brining the total number of those infected to eight.
Felipe Aguirre Arias, head of the department's health ministry, confirmed that the patient is not in danger of dying of the illness, and that he will be transferred to Medellin, the capital of the department for the swiftest treatment.
Last week, four people died of the disease, including soldiers and civilians, but the 31 soldiers who are under observation in local hospitals are recovering satisfactorily.
General Luiz Alfonso Zapata, commander of the Colombian army's 18th Brigade, said that the three non-commissioned officers and 28 ordinary soldiers of the Velez Battalion, based in Necoclil, will be under observation for one more week.
Hanta virus causes haemorrhaging, muscular pain, gastritis, rotting of the kidneys and breathing difficulties. The virus is most commonly spread by rodents in their dropping.
In an entirely separate incident, around 250 Colombian soldiers are in hospital suffering from a protozoan infection called leishmaniosis, Duitama, in the region of Boyaca, and Tolemaida, in Cundinamarca.
