Angola confirms first swine flu cases

LUANDA - Angola has confirmed its first swine flu infections after doctors detected four cases, Health Minister Jose Van-Dunem said on Wednesday.

"There is no need to panic, we are taking the appropriate measures to control the situation," Van-Dunem told Radio Nacional de Angola.

Two Angolans and two Brazilians had tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus, he added.

All four cases were identified in Luanda but the patients are believed to have picked up their infections while travelling abroad in Brazil, South Africa, Spain and Portugal.

Surveillance at Angola's ports and airports would be stepped up to try to stop more cases coming into the country, Van-Dunem said.

He reported that from 19 to 26 January 2010, the picture of the epidemic in the country is maintained, due to increased health infrastructure and access to drinking water.

"Since reaching a final peace, the Angolan government has embarked on national reconstruction, with priority health areas for which we have a strong society and peace in these years the country increased the number of infrastructure", said

The Health Minister also noted that the epidemic continues to cause fatalities worldwide, taking into accounting the aggressive tendency of pollution of the H1N1 virus.

We regret very existence of 14,144 deaths since the epidemic was declared globally," he said while adding that this year has recorded 590 deaths, from January 15, 2010.
