  • Elkhart County: Health officer says 'influenza activity' worse than normal

GOSHEN -- If you didn't already know it, swine flu is here.

Elkhart County Health Officer Daniel Nafziger told the Elkhart County Council Thursday that he's been receiving numerous calls from around the county about swine flu cases "and we anticipate it's going to be here indefinitely."

He didn't quantify the problem, just said during his appearance before the council to discuss his department's proposed 2010 budget that there's much more "influenza activity" than the norm for this time of year. "It's worse than normal, it's going to get worse yet," he said.

Vaccine against swine flu, also known as H1N1 flu, should arrive in Elkhart County by mid-November. Since the health department has limited resources, he said he's been talking with schools about joining forces so as many people as possible can get vaccinated.

Most susceptible to swine flu seem to be children and young adults. However, Nafziger said the Elkhart County man who died of the ailment was 50 years old.
