State Health Officials Question New H1N1 Study

A new study indicates patients recovering from the H1N1 flu can still spread the virus long after their fever breaks.

Instead of being contagious for a day or two, the study shows the risk of spreading H1N1 lasts about a week. It suggests when the coughing stops is a better indicator of recovery than the reduction of a fever.

Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Judy Monroe is cautious about the findings because of the study's small size. She discounts the need to change any of the state's current guidelines for H1N1 patients returning to work or school.

However, Monroe says the new study does validate the need for Indiana residents to get the H1N1 flu vaccine, which will be available later in October.

For now, though, she recommends people get their seasonal flu shot as soon as possible.
