TAIPEI, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- A 34-year-old man in Taiwan has died of A/H1N1 influenza, bringing the island's death toll to 18, according to epidemic control authorities Tuesday.

The man was reported to be the first victim sent to hospital in a critical condition on the island. He had been in hospital for more than 80 days, undergoing treatment.

On Sept. 20, a pregnant woman on the island died of the flu virus.

The island had not reported any new cases in hospital as of Tuesday. The total number of cases who had been sent to hospital reached 298, among whom 25 were still in hospital and 255 had been discharged.

Swine flu claims one more life in Taiwan
TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Swine flu, officially known as influenza A (H1N1) , has claimed one more life in Taiwan, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported Tuesday.

The victim, the 18th in Taiwan, was a 34-year-old man who was also the country's first patient hospitalized for severe H1N1 symptoms, the center said.

The man, who suffered from ankylosing spondylitis -- a form of chronic inflammation of the spine and the sacroiliac joints which causes spinal pain and stiffness -- had been in intensive care since being hospitalized in mid-July after showing severe flu-like symptoms.

According to the center, the man had received intubation and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) , but such efforts failed to save him. He died late Monday from septic shock.

Meanwhile, the center said Tuesday that no new H1N1 hospitalization cases had been reported in the previous 24 hours, leaving the total number of hospitalized patients since the outbreak began at 298, including 18 fatalities.

Of that number, only 25 are still being treated in local hospitals, while the other 255 have been discharged.

A CECC official said Sunday that the intensity of the swine flu outbreak is on the downswing in Taiwan as the rate of people being hospitalized with the H1N1 virus had clearly declined.

Swine flu claims the life of woman with chronic illness

TAOYUAN, Taiwan -- Despite signs of a waning epidemic, health authorities yesterday confirmed yet another A(H1N1) related death involving a 24-year-old woman already suffering from a chronic illness.

The victim, who had a severe case of pectus excavatum, came down with flu-like symptoms on Sept. 26 and tested positive for the novel virus, said the Public Health Bureau (PHB) under the Taoyuan County government.

The disease exacerbated quickly and she died from respiratory failure on Sept. 29, the PHB was cited as explaining.

Pectus excavatum is a congenital deformity of the anterior wall of the chest that produces a sunken appearance of the sternum.

This places the death toll at 19, said health officials.

People who have underlying illnesses are particularly susceptible to developing severe infections.

Most fatalities recorded to date have been people with preexisting health conditions.

According to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), one hospitalized A(H1N1) case was reported as of yesterday morning, raising the total to 306.
