Roughly 330,000 people are estimated to have visited medical institutions across Japan for flu treatment during the week through Sunday, up from around 240,000 the previous week, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases said Friday. The institute released the estimated figure based on data reported by about 5,000 hospitals, clinics and other medical institutions designated to observe the flu situation in the country amid the spread of the new strain of influenza.
The number of flu cases at the institutions totaled 30,765, up from 20,365 a week earlier. Experts say most of the people involved in the reported cases are believed to have the H1N1 virus of influenza A. By prefecture, Hokkaido topped the list with 16.99 people per institution, followed by Fukuoka with 13.41 and Okinawa with 10.47.
