Influenza A H1N1v

There is evidence that Infuenza A H1N1v continues to circulate in Scotland with the overall levels
of illness which may be due to the virus higher this week compared to last week.

We report data from 78% of practices across Scotland submitting data to HPS. The daily
average GP consultation rate for Scotland was 106.4 per 100 000 in the week ending 9
October 2009. This represents a 24% increase on the consultation rate from last week
(86.1/100 000) but is comparable to that for the week ending 25 September 2009.

Based on samples submitted from sentinel practices for H1N1v testing, the estimate of
H1N1v positivity among those consulting their GPs has increased to 29.3% this week
(from 16.4% last week). This level is similar to that observed in the week ending 25
September 2009. This increase represents an increased swab positivity rate in all age
groups less than 44, and particularly in those aged 0-4.
The estimated number of new Infuenza A H1N1v cases this week who consulted their GP
was 4370. This figure represents an almost doubling in the estimates of those with H1N1v
infection attending their GP during the past week. Since not all people consult their GP, we
estimate that the total number of people in Scotland who have contracted H1N1v over the
last week is 12500. This refects an almost doubling (84% increase) in the estimated number
of individuals in the community with H1N1v. Note that this is a return to the level observed in
week 39 (21 - 25 September 2009).
A further sixty four people, confrmed as having Infuenza A H1N1v infection, required
hospital admission in the last week. The cumulative total of laboratory confrmed
hospitalised cases is 272 (as at midday Monday 12 October). Since week 35 the number of hospitalised cases has more than doubled
? this is predominantly a result of the increase
in cases being hospitalised in the last two weeks. This, however, is within the levels we
would expect at this stage in the pandemic curve.
There have been four further deaths reported since the previous report. The total number
of deaths among confrmed Infuenza A H1N1v cases in Scotland is now fourteen (as at
midday Monday 12 October).
