  • Indiana: Week 42 Oct 18-24. 2009

    * The current percentage of influenza-like illness reported by the emergency department surveillance (ED) system (12.7%) has considerably surpassed the seasonal peak experienced during the 2008/9 influenza season.
    * The percent of patients presenting at sentinel providers with influenza-like illness (ILI) is at its highest level since February 1999.
    * Persons 0-18 years and 25-64 years of age saw the largest increases in rates of hospitalizations and deaths associated with ILI and pneumonia. These increases are probably due to the increased burden younger populations are experiencing with the spread of 2009 H1N1 flu in our community.
    * During week 42, there were 39 Indiana schools (K-12) that reported having at least one day with a 20% or higher absenteeism rate.
    * 100% of specimens (69/69) that were positive for influenza were the 2009 H1N1 flu.
    * Based on the latest data available in the Children and Hoosiers Immunization Registry Program (CHIRP), a total of 125,458 individuals in Indiana have received the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine.
