Re: FluTrackers is a Charity Staffed by Volunteers
Thank you Tonka.
We wish we could pay posters, but we do not have the money, grants, endowments, etc.
Honestly, I personally support the site for about 50%. The other half comes from "regular" world citizens. We do not accept any money from corporations or governments. Our basic monthly cost for the server, bank servicing fees, dial-up back up, etc. is approximately $400.00 per month. For instance, when I call long distance for the radio show, I make those calls on my home phone which I personally pay for. It has been this way for years.
I have turned down many offers to place advertisements on the site. We are approached frequently. We are a heavily visited site and this traffic necessitates that we have our own server with 4 processors and extra memory. In November we had 237,251 unique visitors, not including search bots etc. Quantcast has us at 90,000 but they only measure US traffic and the majority of our traffic is international.
Part of the cost for the server is generated by the load required to allow the world's search engines (bots) to visit and download the site. We want to reach as many as possible and we feel this is our duty and privilege in compliance with our mission.
We also do not sell anything. We feel to maintain our objectivity we must rely solely on contributions from the world's citizens. We are a global "grass roots" organization.
No one can tell us what to print. What to say. How to feel.
As result of this "stubborness" we are constantly "broke".
But we will not "sell out" now. No one came to help us financially as we were building FluTrackers and, now, we will not accept their money.
We will continue to publish with the first criteria being "What will help the most people?".
To those posters who can find employment elsewhere in this field, our hearts and best wishes are with you. You always have a home here at FT.
Thank you to everyone for the years of selfless contributions of time and money.
