It isn't just H1N1 and H5N1. All infectious disease reporting seems to have slowed down. There hasn't been a serious mystery illness outbreak since H1N1 hit the Ukraine. There hasn't been a confirmed Ebola or Marburg case anywhere in the world for 14 months now (a gap I can't remember ever seeing). We haven't even seen a report of a confirmed human plague case in several months (and we know those average about 3,000 a year worldwide - so those are likely still happening).

I wonder if after a hectic year of reporting in 2009, media is just tired of infectious disease news.

Maybe. But the threats are still there. H5N1 is still enzootic in much of the world, the VHF viruses are still out there, H1N1 is still pandemic, and you never know what might come next.

Things won't stay quiet for long, I fear. But I do like it better this way...
