EU newcomer Bulgaria banned on Monday the sale of live birds at open markets as a precaution after the highly virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu was confirmed in Hungary, comments today Reuters.

The agriculture ministry said birds should be bred only indoors in 10 regions on the Danube river and across the Black Sea coast.

Bulgaria had its first case of H5N1 last February in a wild swan.
Hungary detected the highly pathogenic virus earlier this month which was the first outbreak in the European Union this year.

Bulgarian veterinary officials also urged increased monitoring over the poultry farms, the markets for live birds and checks on the luggage of people coming from abroad for poultry products that had not undergone heat treatment.

BULGARIA TAKES PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST BIRD FLU
    10:33 Tue 30 Jan 2007

Bulgaria is taking protective measures against the eventual spread of bird flu.
Pleven deputy regional governor Aidun Ismailov summoned the regional epidemiological committee in order to come up with measures to counter the eventual spread of the infection in Bulgaria, Bulgarian news agency BTA reported.
Keeping birds outdoors is already forbidden in the region. The measures were needed after a bird flu outbreak was registered in Hungary.
Sale of birds on open markets has been banned as well, Romanian Realitatea TV reported.
Realitatea reported that Bulgaria previously registered a bird flu outbreak. In February 2006 infected dead swans were found in the northern part of the country, the report said.
