Tokyo, Jan. 17 (EFE) .- South Korea has ordered the slaughter of about 2 million head of livestock from late November when it was confirmed an outbreak of foot and mouth disease that has spread to five provinces in the country, sources officers.
Seoul has been confirmed in the last 50 days a total of 120 cases of the disease in several farms in the country despite efforts by authorities to contain the epidemic, according to government data compiled by the South Korean agency Yonhap.
In total, the Ministry of Agriculture has ordered 1.98 million slaughter cattle, including cows, pigs and goats on farms since 4155 that the first outbreak was detected on 29 November.
And for the first time since 2000, has ordered the vaccination of 3.58 million animals and the number is expected to increase in coming days.
South Korea suffered an epidemic of foot-ten years ago, and again recorded the disease in 2002 and early 2010, before that in November the last epidemic outbreak.
It is estimated that FMD could damage South Korea's livestock sector by at least 1.5 trillion won (about one billion euros), according to Yonhap.
The fight against FMD in South Korea coincides with the appearance of 26 cases of bird flu in the east and southwest, which since December has killed 3.57 million chickens and ducks, the agency said South Korea. EFE
