Budget of Bt9 million to hospitals with bird flu patients
The National Health Security Committee approves a budget of nine billion baht to hospitals to treat patients suspicious of contracting bird flu.
Public Health Minister Mongkhol Na Songkhla (มงคล ณ สงขลา) reveals that the budget will be allocated to both public and private hospitals. The committee decided to provide financial support to the hospitals as it realizes that the bird flu virus called H5N1 has become more complicated to diagnose and required close medical assistance. The budget also cover expenses the hospitals pay outside international standard laboratories to analyze samples taken from patients with symptoms of bird flu.
Meanwhile, Secretary-General of the National Health Security Office (NHSO), Md.Sughuan Nittayarampong (สงวน นิตยารัมภ์พงศ์) says the budget will help alleviate financial burden of the hospitals. After the hospitals have spent the budget, patients suspicious of contracting H5N1 will receive more effective medical treatment. The secretary-general reports that from July 2006 – January 2007, there have been 869 patients with bird flu symptoms admitted in hospitals under NHSO across the country. The total cost of medical treatment stood at more than nine million baht.
