We are creating a News Feed that will be a ticker tape placed above. We are testing it now. It will consist of copies of the latest posts and other items of interest.
Only FT Editors can move threads or post in the room below labeled "News Feed".
If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please post here.
Perhaps News Feed posts should also have a link to the duplicate post (presumeably) in the main FT structure. That way readers can quickly scan the news feeds and then flip to the commentaries and follow up whenever they see something of interest.
Essentially the RSS component will scrape the first page of results for a given "room/forum" and store them for syndication. The update interval is TBD.
Users that click the links in the ticker will be taken to that specific thread within the NewsFeed room. Since no comments can occur in the NewsFeed area, the user will have to click a link, (provided within the post?) to the originating thread where they can comment/post.
The main issue with this approach is that the original thread will have continued discussion whereas the NewsFeed will not, thus the post in the NewsFeed area will eventually roll off the ticker as newer posts are added.
If comments were allowed in the NewsFeed room, then every time a comment is added to a post, it would "renew" the thread and it will be included in the ticker. Sticky Threads will always be included in the ticker data (until they are unstuck).
Just a reminder that we can now have multiple feeds. For instance if we want "Science" or "Emerging Diseases" feeds they can easily be created independent of the ticker. And since the format is RSS 2.0 they can be automatically be displayed in any RSS reader (or even bolted directly into the FireFox browswer).
I've updated the news ticker to adjust the alignment of the headlines when they scroll into view. Also, each headline will now pause for 3.5 seconds. Let me know if you think that is too long or short of a pause.
In addition to the update, attached to this post, is a EXE version of the ticker that you can run on your desktop. If anyone wants a Mac OSX version let me know and I'll post it as well. No installation is required to run the application.
Sorry, but have to include it:
