Bird flu in Burma has been brought under control with no more new cases found last week, the World Health Organization confirmed today.

Ms. Kanokporn Coninxk, Technical Officer of the WHO Rangoon office told Mizzima, "There is no fresh outbreak in the last three days. There are no more cases." [Three days and, therefore, everything's under control...?]

"For the time being, the situation is under control." Ms. Coninxk added.

He Changchui, the FAO's regional representative, who visited Burma to inspect the situation said at a press conference in Bangkok last week that with up to 100 cases of outbreaks the situation in Burma was worse than it was thought to be.

D.K Wantanee the Regional Coordinator of UN Food and Agriculture Organization told Mizzima that there were less outbreaks of the disease in the week following the visit by He Changchui to Burma. There were no more new cases detected last week.

However, Wantanee said a team of experts from the WHO would visit Burma later this month.

She also added that FAO and WHO have been working closely at both country and regional levels and have provided technical assistance to contain fresh outbreaks of the disease.

On March 13, authorities confirmed the first case of bird flu in Mandalay, central Burma. Since then the authorities began culling birds and quails in Burma?s central divisions of Mandalay and Sagaing and restricted the sale of chicken and chicken products.

According to the state-run newspaper, New Light of Myanmar, more than 500,000 chickens and quails were culled in more than 400 farms in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease.
