Rushing Aid to Earthquake Survivors in China
A massive earthquake in central China has killed at least 12,000 people, buried more than 25,000 under the rubble of collapsed buildings and destroyed 3.5 million homes.
Mercy Corps is supporting a longtime local partner, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA), in its efforts to help survivors. You can help us rush relief to thousands in China's most devastated areas.
The 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Sichuan Province on Monday was so powerful that skyscrapers hundreds of miles away in Shanghai swayed. People in Thailand and Vietnam also felt the shocks.
A complete picture of the devastation is still coming into focus as emergency response teams reach the most affected areas. Two of our Beijing-based staff deployed to Sichuan Province within hours of the tremblor, and will help CFPA coordinate relief efforts to some of the 6.2 million people living where shaking was recorded as "severe," "violent" or "extreme."
Since 2001, we have worked with CFPA and other local organizations to bring help and hope to poor families and vulnerable communities in many areas of China. We've confirmed that staff and partners from our Sichuan program ? Project GLOW, which offers leadership opportunities to vulnerable young women ? are safe.

Myanmar Cyclone Update:
Mercy Corps continues to mobilize a relief effort in Myanmar, where as many as 1.9 million people are struggling to survive in the aftermath of Asia's biggest cyclone in 27 years. Our top European official has arrived in Myanmar's capital, with three of our most seasoned aid workers on their way in the next 24 hours. A logistics team is deploying to Bangkok, where a shipment of hundreds of work gloves, solar-powered flashlights, tarps and other relief items should arrive by week's end.
