Bulgaria bans fowl export to EU countries

SOFIA, Bulgaria, July 27 (UPI) -- Bulgaria has banned exports of poultry to the EU, fearing a disease outbreak in southern Bulgaria may be a mix of "Newcastle" disease and bird flu.

Zheko Bajchev, head of Bulgaria's veterinary service, introduced the ban on exports of live poultry and products as a precaution against spreading of Newcastle disease to the European Union, the Sofia News Agency reported Thursday.

The poultry infection was confirmed earlier this month in the village of Slunchogled in the Kurdzhali region in southern Bulgaria.

Slunchogled has been quarantined for 21 days to prevent spreading of disease.

The export ban is to remain in force until the European Commission rules on the case, probably in mid-August.

Preliminary tests indicated the virus might be different from the deadly H5N1 strain.

Bulgaria's vet service has sent samples to Britain's laboratory at Weybridge, outside London, for additional tests to determine the bird flu strain, the SNA said.

The EU plans to accept Bulgaria and Romania as full members of the organization on Jan. 1, 2007.
