The Muppets of Mexico's Plaza Sesamo Address Swine Flu

As news and concern about a potential swine flu pandemic troubles Mexico and the rest of the world, the Muppets of Plaza S?samo have stepped up to address the issue with children and their families in four Public Service Announcements (PSAs), which began airing on the Televisa channel on April 29, 2009.
Featuring Pancho and Lola, the beloved Muppets of Plaza S?samo (Mexico?s version of Sesame Street), and Mexican celebrities such as Lucero, Jorge Poza and Adri?n Uribe, the messages encourage children to alert a parent if they feel sick, cover their nose and mouth if they sneeze or cough, and wash their hands for at least 20 seconds, several times a day. The PSAs were developed between Plaza S?samo?s Education and Research team and M?xico?s Ministry of Health.
?Whether they are learning to read or count, facing natural disasters, or practicing healthy habits, we combine our expert research with the power of Muppets to provide children and their families with the tools they need to cope with what is going on in their communities,? said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO, Sesame Workshop. ?Today, we are creating PSAs in Mexico to generate an awareness of the flu virus and the steps kids and families can take to lead safer, healthier lives.?
?Especially in a time of crisis, when people feel scared and confused? said Javier Williams, Executive Producer, Televisa, ?it is essential that Plaza S?samo remain a constant, friendly place where children can go for a sense of comfort and understanding.?
The need for the PSAs emerged when Ginger Brown, executive producer of Plaza S?samo traveled to Mexico City to begin work on the series? next season. When she arrived, she found Mexico City focused preventing the spread of the virus. She quickly set aside work on the new season to produce the PSAs, which would provide basic, age-appropriate hygiene messages to children to help prevent further transmission.
?It is reassuring to know we can bring a feeling of warmth and even a sense of empowerment to children when the world around them feels completely disordered by telling them, ?Here is what you can do to stay healthy.? The timing was coincidental, but we are fortunate to have a long-term relationship with Televisa that allows us to respond quickly.?
Sesame Workshop and Televisa will also offer the PSAs to several government organizations to extend the message in Mexico including the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, the Government Workers? Social Security and Services Institute (el ISSSTE) and Mexico City?s public transit system.
