I am encouraging friends to purchase bicycles now. I purchased mine last year from a regular discount store, and it has held up very well with a minimum of maintenance. A simple backpack strapped on carries quite a lot.
I've found it to be quite easy to navigate especially since there are so many gears on it. Much more than my old Batavus ten speed that I rode over thirty years ago. We live in a hilly area, and I enjoy giving my muscles a stretch. It's doable.
If there are fuel shortages, I can easily travel on my bike. Make sure you buy a gelpack seat. They're quite a bit more comfortable than the racing saddles that typically come on them.
I actually tooled around in the wintertime to see what that would be like. A simple ski mask and gloves and layers made it tolerable even for ten mile rides. People thought I absolutely mad, but I'm glad I did it to test myself. I have ridden in all kinds of weather but never on the ice. It should be possible to put up a faring on the bike to keep water from slinging back, but to date it hasn't been an issue.
If you're also in a market for a day pack backpack, I'd recommend the ones that you can carry your laptop in as well as a ton of books. The insulating layer is great for many things and I've been surprised how much I can pack around. I usually use a fanny pack too so that I can keep certain items immediately available like my keys and cell phone.
We need to make certain we exercise to manage stress right now. Getting in shape before the next round of the flu will help you and your lived ones later.
