A fifth Suffolk County resident with a confirmed case of swine flu has died, the county's health department said Monday.

The latest victim is a woman from the Town of Babylon, between 55 and 65 years old, "who had multiple underlying medical problems," the county said in a news release.

The woman was hospitalized June 6, diagnosed with the H1N1 virus on June 23 and died Saturday.

Suffolk Health Commissioner Dr. Humayun Chaudhry expressed his sympathy to the victim's loved ones and asked that "residents continue to be mindful of the steps that they can take to minimize their exposure to the virus."

"Those with underlying medical problems should be particularly vigilant and contact their physician immediately should flulike symptoms occur," Chaudhry said in a written statement.

Suffolk has reported 136 confirmed cases of swine flu.

A middle-aged Smithtown man who died last Tuesday became the fourth death associated with swine flu in Suffolk.

The man, between 45 and 55 years old, had been hospitalized since mid-June for "multiple acute and chronic underlying medical problems," Chaudhry said last week.

Last Monday, the health department announced the death of a man from Babylon with swine flu. The man, between 65 and 75 years old, also had a serious underlying condition and other medical problems.

In Nassau, one person has died - a young pregnant woman who had just given birth.
