East Hampton Man Succumbs To Swine Flu
    By Aaron Boyd

East Hampton - An East Hampton man passed away due to complications surrounding the H1N1 virus, formerly known as the swine flu, marking the seventh death in Suffolk County related to the disease and the first on the East End.

Representatives of the Suffolk County Department of Health Services would not release the man's name, however they did state that he was between the ages of 25 and 35 and was suffering from an underlying health condition before being diagnosed with H1N1. The man was admitted to the hospital on July 10 with a high fever and pneumonia and subsequently passed away on Thursday, July 23.

This marks only the third confirmed case of the swine flu on the South Fork, with 160 confirmed cases throughout Suffolk County since the virus began spreading on the island. ?Because the virus is now everywhere and has not gone away, and seasonal influenza remains a concern," Dr. Humayun Chaudhry, commissioner at the Department of Health, stated ?It is important that residents continue to strongly adhere to our advice," including washing your hands frequently, sneezing and coughing into a tissue or your elbow and staying home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms.

The H1N1 virus generally presents similar symptoms to that of the seasonal flu, however for ?high risk" patients the strain could prove deadly. ?High risk groups include young children, pregnant women, residents of chronic-care facilities, persons who are immunosuppressed, persons who are under the age of 19 years who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy, and persons with underlying health conditions, including chronic pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, hematological disorders, metabolic disorders, and neuromuscular disorders," Dr. Chaudhry explained. Those who do not fall into one of these high-risk categories yet are feeling ill are encouraged not to panic, but to call their primary care physician who can prescribe the appropriate tests and/or medications and to stay home, as the flu is contagious for seven days after symptoms first appear.
