Two more have succumbed to H1N1 virus in the State Capital. The victims, J. Raja Babu (42) and Sunil Kumar (38), died on Friday and Saturday respectively. Another person, Srikanth (20) died at Gandhi Hospital on Saturday morning with suspected symptoms of swine flu. The swine flu toll in Andhra Pradesh has now swelled to six.

J. Raja Babu, a resident of Ramnagar, was brought to Gandhi Hospital from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and died on Friday night while Sunil Kumar died at Aware-Global Hospitals, L. B. Nagar, on Saturday morning, authorities said. Both the deceased died due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and swine flu.

In all, till date, the authorities have confirmed 247 cases of swine flu and five fatalities in Andhra Pradesh. Another patient admitted to Aware-Global Hospitals is in a critical condition since last one week. All the five persons, who died of swine flu in Hyderabad, were locals and had no travel history. The H1N1 virus is now fully localised in Andhra Pradesh, officials acknowledge.

Three swine flu deaths in Hyderabad


HYDERABAD: For the first time, since the outbreak of swine flu in the Andhra Pradesh capital, three persons have died due to A (H1N1) within a day.

The victims, J. Raja Babu (42) and Srikanth (20), died at Gandhi Hospital on Friday night and Saturday morning respectively.

The third person Sunil Kumar (38), died at Aware-Global Hospitals, L.B. Nagar on Saturday.

With this, the death toll due to swine flu has gone up to seven in the State. Health authorities have confirmed that nine persons, hailing from various parts of the twin cities, have also tested positive. Total swine flu cases have now gone up to 256.

One more person died of influenza A (H1N1) on Sunday, taking the death toll to eight since the outbreak of swine flu in Hyderabad.

A woman, who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in LB Nagar in Hyderabad, died on Sunday morning. The condition of four more patients at the same hospital is also critical, said doctors.

As many as three swine flu deaths were reported on Saturday. These are the highest number of deaths in a single day.

Since Saturday, health authorities have swung into action to put preventive measures in place.

More swine flu cases are being confirmed from different parts of the state capital. According to health officials, total confirmed cases now stand at 256. Hyderabad had reported India's first swine flu case on May 16.

However, the first swine flu death was reported on September 2. Two people died on the same day while two more died on September 5.

Meanwhile, swine flu has claimed the life of a software engineer hailing from Hyderabad in the US. According to delayed reports reaching the health department, A. Charan died of swine flu on September 1 in California. His body was brought in Hyderabad on September 10 and was cremated the same day.

Swine flu has so far claimed 172 lives in India.

Death toll rises to 12; Nalgonda collector too tests positive

HYDERABAD: The H1N1 flu death toll in AP rose to 12 with the death of one more person on Monday even as a district collector was admitted to the Chest Hospital with confirmed symptoms.

Twenty-year-old Ashish Raj, Vanasthalipuram resident and employee in a local homeopathy store, died on Sunday night at OGH. Also on Sunday, 22-year-old Farida Begum of Deverkonda in Nalgonda died at Global Hospital in LB Nagar. Both of them did not have a travel history.

The toll touched 12 after doctors at Chest Hospital told TOI on Monday that businessman Umesh Kumar Agarwal, who died in the hospital on Aug. 15, had indeed tested positive and was the first victim in the state. ?The test reports from the NICD confirmed it,? a doctor said.

On Monday, four more patients tested positive for the virus. Nalgonda collector Syed Ali Murtaza Rizvi (1999 batch), who took charge of the district in June, also tested positive. ?After conducting tests, it was confirmed that Rizvi was infected. He is out of danger,? state additional director (communicable diseases) B Ramaswaroop said.

Meanwhile, health minister D Nagender on Monday said that its treatment has been brought under Arogyasri. ?Those network hospitals that already have facilities to treat H1N1 flu should accept Arogyasri beneficiaries who would be covered for Rs one lakh. Network hospitals which lack the facilities will be given time till Sept-end to set up the same. Action will be taken against those hospitals that do not comply,? he said.

As per the guidelines, the network hospitals will have to set up isolation wards with 10 beds and ventilators with 5 beds. Nagender said screening centres set up in all the district hospitals will start functioning from Tuesday. ?There are also plans to conduct H1N1 flu tests round the clock at the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) in the wake of increasing flu cases in the state,? the minister said.

Hyderabad, Sep 15 (PTI) The swine flu deaths in Andhra Pradesh rose to 14 with two more persons succumbing to the deadly disease.

While death of one Madan Rao was confirmed from Aware Global, other positive patient Santosh died at the Gandhi Hospital, officials said.

Meanwhile, the District Health and Medical officer Ch.

Jayakumari said a total of 43 samples were tested today of which 15 were positive.

Jayakumari said several hospitals have come forward and provided beds and ventilators. In all there are 117 beds and 36 ventilators across the twin cities to treat the patients.

HYDERABAD: With three more deaths on Tuesday, the state?s swine flu toll has gone up to 16. Madan Mohan, a Home Guard from Kurnool, died of H1N1 flu
at the Global Hospital in L B Nagar. Rajitha, A 25-year-old housewife from Medak district died at Gandhi Hospital on Tuesday evening.

In the third case, a 25-year-old woman K Santoshi, native of Warangal district died at Gandhi Hospital even as samples of another patient, Mohammed Osman, who had died at OGH on September 13, tested positive for swine flu on Tuesday taking the death toll to 16.

Earlier, Osmania General Hospital resident medical officer Dr Sudha Rani confirmed to TOI that Ashish Raj, 25-year-old resident of Vanasthalipuram, who died at OGH on September 13 also tested positive for swine flu. On Tuesday, 15 more people tested positive for swine flu.

A 15-year-old boy died of swine flu in Warangal on Wednesday, taking the death toll due to the virus in the state to 15, Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah said.


Sai Krishna, a class 10th student, died due to the H1N1 virus here last night.

The death toll due to the viral disease today rose to 203 from 201 last night as two more persons succumbed to the infection today in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra each.

Three other persons tested positive for H1N1 influenza in the district and are being treated in various hospitals, Lakshmaiah told reporters after a meeting with the district health authorities.

The minister said special arrangements were being made in the MGM hospital in Warangal for treating swine flu affected patients and 7,200 doses of Tamiflu tablets are available.

Meanwhile, dengue claimed the life of a tribal M D Sajju in the Mulugu agency area in Warangal district, he said, adding that six cases tested positive for the disease.

The minister, who hails from Warangal, said 600 villages in the tribal-dominated agency area in the district have been identified as prone to dengue and 638 special medical camps would be organised to treat the patients and provide them with medical facilities.

HYDERABAD: With the A (H1N1) virus claiming its first victim in Warangal district among four diagnosed with swine flu, Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laksmaiah held a teleconference with district officials here on the Wednesday.
Briefing media persons later, Mr. Laksmaiah, who hails from the district, said following the death of a X class student Sai Krishna of Narmetta mandal and death of Md. Sajju of Venkatapuram village in Mulug mangal due to dengue, he told the district machinery to focus more on preventive measures with coordination of all departments concerned on a war-footing.
Hospitals on alert


He said 69 primary health centres and area hospitals in the district apart form MGM Hospital and TB Hospital at the district headquarters were put on alert. About 10,000 masks and 7,200 doses of Tamiflu medicine were despatched to the district. The district so far reported six dengue cases as against 40 cases and two deaths last year.
Medical camps


Admitting that people?s anxiety was mounting due to outbreak of swine flu, dengue and other seasonal fevers, Mr. Laksmaiah said extensive medical camps were being organised in the district since last month. While 650 medical camps were organised in August in sensitive villages including those in agency areas, another 638 camps were scheduled for this month.
Special focus


He directed the district machinery to pay special focus on children and aged and called for coordination between ICDS, Social Welfare, ITDA, Medical and Health and Revenue departments for deputing teams wherever necessary for extending medical help.
Apart from Chief Minister K. Rosaiah who was monitoring the outbreak of swine flu at the State level, Mr. Laksmaiah was the first Minister who started monitoring the situation in his district in the wake of panic over viral and other seasonal fevers while majority of Ministers were yet to pay attention to their own portfolios, leave alone monitoring the worrying public health situation after the death of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

Claims its second victim in Mahabubnagar


HYDERABAD: The swine flu virus, which was hitherto confined to a few cities in Andhra Pradesh, claimed its second victim in Mahabubnagar district on Thursday as the disease spread fast to new areas. A suspected patient was quarantined in Guntur.

According to information reaching here, Saritha of Peddapur village in Veldanda mandal in Mahabubnagar district, died at a private hospital in Hyderabad in the early hours on Thursday. Saritha who gave birth to a girl child at Kalwakurthy hospital, a few days ago, developed breathing problems and symptoms of swine flu. Doctors at Kalwakurthy referred her to Hyderabad where she died while undergoing treatment. Another woman, Renuka (25), has been admitted to a private hospital in Mahabubnagar, where her condition was said to be critical. Two other persons, Anjaneyulu and Kishore, are undergoing treatment at government headquarters hospital.

Woman quarantined


Guntur Staff Reporter adds:

A woman in Krishna Nagar was quarantined on Thursday at her home after her husband, a post graduate student pursuing Nephrology course in Hyderabad, tested positive for the A(H1N1) virus. She seemed to have contracted the virus from her husband who visited Guntur, a few days ago. Doctors assured her she would be stable within a couple of days. The couple has a four-year-old child. Doctors classified the infection under category D and said that it occurs due to contact with an infected person.

Government General Hospital Superintendent D. Phanibhushan said that the staff at the GGH and the Fever Hospital on the Amaravathi Road were on the alert following spread of the disease. The GGH had stock of 300 boxes of Tamiflu medicine and made arrangements for procuring more if necessary, he said.

HYDERABAD: The death toll due to swine flu continued to surge in the State Capital with authorities confirming two more deaths on Thursday. The victims were Yellamma (30) of Nalgonda and Vijaylaksmi (27) from Warasiguda, who died at Gandhi Hospital on September 16 and 15 respectively.

The health authorities have also confirmed 15 persons to have tested positive on Thursday. With this, the death toll due to swine flu has surged to 18, number of positive swine flu cases has gone up to 392 and total number of samples collected till now is at 810.

The 15 swine flu positive cases have been reported from various parts of twin cities like Nagole, Malakpet, Uppal and Punjagutta

MAHABUBNAGAR: The swine flu virus has claimed its third victim from the district. Twenty three-year-old Renuka died of swine flu while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mahabubnagar on Thursday night. According to information Renuka of Pothulamadugu village in Bhootpur mandal gave birth to a boy a week ago. Later she developed breathing problem and was shifted to a private hospital in the town. - Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Two more persons have succumbed to H1N1 virus in twin cities even as doctors at both private and Government hospitals are mulling a different line of treatment with other drugs to revive patients on ventilator support.

With Saturday’s deaths, the toll has risen to 20 and authorities confirmed that six more patients are on ventilators at various hospitals.

The victims identified as G. Laxmi (42) from Kapugadda, Shamshabad and Satyanarayana (40) of Malkajgiri died at Erragadda Chest Hospital and Osmania General Hospital respectively.
G. Laxmi, who died on Saturday morning, was admitted to Chest Hospital on September 16 and since then she was on ventilator. Authorities said that Satyanaranaya died at OGH on Friday last.

Late stage


With late stage swine flu patients not responding to treatment, doctors at private hospitals have already started using new drugs to revive patients. Doctors at Aware-Global Hospitals have informed that the condition of three patients, Vijayalakshmi, Subramanyam and Sada Tabassum, who were on ventilator support, has improved after changing medication.

“In some cases we have doubled the doses of Oseltamivir. Some are not responding to Oseltamivir and on them we are using rota-inhaler Zanamivir, which has to be inhaled. Condition of three patients has improved,” Dr. Ravindra of Aware-Global Hospitals, L. B. Nagar said.

Doctors at Chest Hospital are also looking at introducing new drugs, which could help patients admitted to hospitals with late stage swine flu.

The hospital doctors are in contact with doctors in United States to find the feasibility of using intra-venous drug Peramivir instead of capsule Tamiflu. “We are in touch with US doctors to find their experiences while using intra-venous drugs. These drugs are not available in India but can be exported from US. Once the vaccine gets its nod, then we can hope that authorities start importing vaccines to India,” Dr. Subhakar said.

Schoolboy?s death sparks H1N1scare

By Our Correspondent Ooty, Sept 18: The death of a schoolboy here has sparked swine flu scare which is now keeping health officials on their toes to take necessary precautions to keep the dreaded disease at bay.

Prathim Chatterjee (8), a native of Assam studying in class-III at a private school located at Wood Cock Road and a hosteller, is said to have developed high fever and pulmonary problems a couple of days ago.

He was admitted to a private hospital here on Wednesday and on Thursday he was shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore where he died that night around 11.30 pm.

As news of his death sparked a swine flu scare here, higher government officials, along with a team of physicians, rushed to the school to screen the 300 students there, most of them hostellers, to ascertain whether any of them showed signs of the disease.

Speaking to mediapersons, Dr K. Amutha Devi, deputy director of health services in Nilgiris, said Prathim?s throat swab was taken for analysis and the result will be known in three days. Only then will it be known whether he was infected with swine flu or not.

However, the health department has alerted all the schools in the hill district to look out for swine flu-related symptoms among the students.

Saying that people need not panic, she said the district has enough stock of Tamiflu tablets to treat the disease, in case there is an outbreak.

HYDERABAD: The death toll due to swine flu continues to surge in the State Capital. A 27-year-old youth Shankar from Kurumanagar, Uppal, succumbed to H1N1 virus on Sunday morning at Gandhi Hospital. Consequently, the toll due to H1N1 virus reached 21 in the State.

Two more patients are said to be critical in Gandhi Hospital while six more patients are on ventilator support at other hospitals in the twin cities.

The authorities have also confirmed 13 new cases of swine flu on Sunday, taking the total number of patients in twin cities to 413. All the confirmed swine flu cases are from twin cities and are admitted to private and Government hospitals, authorities add.

Shortage of medicine


With a large number of children getting infected with H1N1 virus and due to huge demand, Oseltamivir syrups are in short supply in twin cities. Doctors point out that children, if tested positive for swine flu, should be given Oseltamivir syrups and not capsules. The drug in syrup form is easy to ingest and has relatively lesser side effects. Meanwhile, health authorities have informed that doctors from Hyderabad would be sent to all the districts in the State to oversee and help out district doctors in collecting samples and treating patients. Senior doctors from the Capital will visit cities like Tirupati, Vijayawada and all the Telangana districts from where less number of samples have been collected and sent for testing.

?We will visit districts to improve surveillance and help local doctors in collecting swab samples scientifically. The aim is to make the district doctors self-sufficient so that they don?t refer patients to Hyderabad. Since most of the hospitals here are under stress, it?s better to treat patients in districts,? said State coordinator for swine flu Dr. K. Subhakar.
