Woman dies of swine flu in city, toll reaches 44

PUNE: The H1N1 flu claimed the life of a 30-year-old woman from Ghorpade here on Tuesday, pushing the death toll due to the infection in Pune to 44, even as three educational institutions in the district reported positive cases.

Sharda Fulpati had developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and died at the ICU of the Sahyadri-Munot hospital at 9.45 am, said Ashok Mehta, joint director of health services.

The woman was admitted to the hospital on September 12 in a critical condition with symptoms of cough, fever and breathlessness. She tested positive for the H1N1 flu on Monday, he said, adding that the woman did not have any underlying medical condition.

Besides the three educational institutions, an army officer tested positive for the H1N1 flu, who has been quarantined at the Command Hospital, Mehta said. ?The students who tested positive for the contagion are from the Sant Tukaram Higher Secondary School at Chandannagar, JSPM Engineering College at Wagholi and the Indira College of Engineering and Management at Talegaon Dabhade. However, all these students are in a stable condition,? he said.

PUNE: The H1N1 flu toll in the city climbed to 52 on Thursday with eight more people succumbing to the
contagion.

Four deaths occurred on Thursday, three deaths a day earlier and a seven-year-old boy died early on Tuesday. The throat swab reports of the three victims who died on Wednesday were received only on Thursday, confirming that they were H1N1 positive. As for the boy his H1N1-positive status was confirmed on Tuesday evening after his death the state health services were unaware of his death even on Thursday. The family and the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) medical director confirmed the boy's death to TOI.

The four patients who died on Thursday were 40-year-old Kashinath Ghanshetti of Baner, 60-year-old Duramma Bandhi of Karve road, 35-year-old Naresh Bhatia of Pimpri and 38-year-old Prabhakar Gawde (38) of Gawdewadi in Ambegaon tehsil.

Pune, Sept 18 (PTI) The district administration today described the swine flu situation in the city "alarming", even as the death toll here rose to 54 after five more persons sucummbed to the viral infection.

Five more persons succumbed to the H1N1 virus since last night in the city, the worst pandemic hit city in the country and which has been described by the district administration as alarming.

The latest victims have been identified as Sambhaji Bhivde (25), Prabhakar Gawde (38), Naresh Bhatia (35), Sagar Bhalerao (7) and Jitendra Shukla (40), health officials said.

Meanwhile, attributing current resurgence of H1N1 virus to recently concluded Ganesh festival overcrowding, collector Chandrakant Dalvi told reporters that the administration had kept Central health ministry informed about the pandemic that claimed its first victim here on August 3.

Two youths die, swine flu toll in city climbs to 56

Pune A 24-year-old man, Rupesh Sondkar from Kothrud, and 26-year-old Mahananda Khajappa Sonkamble from Ambegaon Budruk succumbed to swine flu here on Sunday.

With these deaths, Pune has recorded 56 swine flu deaths till date. A total of seven persons tested positive for swine flu on Sunday, while reports of 14 patients are awaited, said Dr Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services.

Sondkar was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital after he complained of severe cold and cough. He tested positive for swine flu and was shifted to Sassoon Hospital on September 13. He was on ventilator and died on Sunday.

Sonkamble was admitted to Bharati and Sanjivani Hospitals before being shifted to Sassoon. She was brought to Sassoon on Saturday and put on ventilator. She died at 4.30 pm on Saturday.

?Both Sonkamble and Sondkar were showing signs of acute respiratory distress
syndrome,? Mehta said.

A total of 21 patients are in intensive care units and 10 are on ventilator. The number of patients in hospital has increased from 158 last Sunday to 210 this Sunday. Sixty patients have been discharged from hospitals.

PUNE: With one more person succumbing on Monday morning, the death toll due to H1N1 influenza has gone up to 57 in the city.


Ambadas Vitthalrao Shivratri, 44, who was admitted to the Sahyadri Munot hospital in Bhavani Peth on September 6, succumbed to the contagion at 12.50 am on Monday.

"He had tested positive for H1N1 influenza," said PMC deputy health officer D D Chandakkar. Shivratri was a resident of Ahmednagar.

Shivratri was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition. "He was immediately put on ventilator. He was suffering from high fever and breathlessness. The throat swab was sent to the National Institute of Virology on the same day. The report confirmed the presence of H1N1 influenza on September 8," Chandakkar said.

Girish Kulkarni, honorary director of NGO Snehalaya and a close associate of the victim, said, "Shivratri was associated with various social organisations. He was also a member of the state executive committee of medical representatives' organisation."

Before being admitted to the Sahyadri Munot Hospital, where he was on ventilator for 15 days, Shivratri was taken to KEM and Sassoon hospitals on September 6, but the isolation ICUs at both the hospitals were full.

Meanwhile, as many as 15 people tested positive for the H1N1 influenza on Monday. "A total number of 313 suspected patients were administered Tamiflu tablets. Around 19,998 people have been given Tamiflu tablets so far," joint director of health services Ashok Mehta said. Nine patients in critical condition are being treated at various private and government hospitals, Mehta added.

"A total number of 46 patients were discharged on Monday," he said.

PUNE: A six-year-old boy from Ahmednagar district, who died on Monday, was declared positive for the Influenza A H1N1 on Tuesday. With this, the
city swine flu death toll has gone up to 58.

Bhushan Satish Kale (6) a resident of Umbare village, Rahuri taluka in Ahmednagar district who was moved to the isolation ICU of the Sassoon general hospital from a private hospital in Rahuri on September 21, died at 9.30 am on Monday (Sept 21), said Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services. "His throat swab report came on Tuesday. The report confirmed the presence of the H1N1 virus," Mehta said.

"For the first few days, the boy was being treated by a local medical practitioners, but was shifted to a local hospital in Rahuri after he did not show any signs of improvement. Bhushan was then shifted to the Sassoon general hospital at 12.10 am on September 21," said Mehta. The boy was a student of De Paul Primary English School in Rahuri, he added.

"Bhushan's condition was critical at the time of admission. He was immediately put on ventilator as he had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)," Mehta said.

Meanwhile, as many as 18 people tested positive for the H1N1 influenza on Tuesday. "A total number of 408 suspected patients are being administered Tamiflu tablets. Around 20,406 people have been given Tamiflu tablets so far," Mehta said, adding that as many as 13 patients, who are in a critical condition, are being treated at various private and government hospitals.

"Four of the suspected cases are on ventilator," Mehta said, adding, "Eighty-four patients were discharged on Monday."

Mehta added that since schools and colleges reopened on August 24, as many as 67 education institutions in Pune district, including 52 schools and 15 colleges, have reported positive H1N1 cases.

Pune, Sept 24 (PTI) With two more persons succumbing to the H1N1 virus at different city hospitals today, the death toll due to swine flu in the city reached 60.

The latest casualties were Dilip Mane (51) and Madan Agarwal (34), a health department spokesman told reporters.

A suspected swine flu patient from Yeravada Central jail died at a government hospital leading to scare and use of disinfectants in the prison premises, a district government spokesman said.

The test reports of the deceased inmate are awaited, he added.

Pune. While Madan Agarwal (41) of Mohannagar in Chinchwad and Dilip Namdeo Mane (51) of Anandnagar on Sihagad road died on Wednesday, undertrial Maruti Ananda Zargad (60) died on Thursday.

?All the three had tested positive for the H1N1 flu,? said Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services. Meanwhile, 16 people tested positive for swine flu on Thursday. ?A total number of 68 suspected patients are being administered Tamiflu tablets,? Yeravada jail prisoner 61st victim of swine flu in Pune

PUNE: An inmate of Yeravada central jail today died of swine flu, taking the toll to 61 in the city, worst hit by the deadly virus.


Prisoner Maruti Zargad, 60, lodged in the jail since June this year on charges of murder, was taken to government Sassoon hospital a few days back for swine flu treatment but he succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus last night, jail authorities said.

"A thorough check was carried out on more than 40 jail inmates in the barrack where the deceased was lodged," said Deputy Inspector General of prisons (Western region) Ravindra Kedari.

A inmates will be screened for the second time today by a team of Sassoon hospital doctors for any possible symptoms of the virus, he added.

The sprawling jail premises houses around 2000 prisoners, who are also involved in a variety of industrial activity carried out during their stay under the supervision of the prison administration.

Pune, Sep 29 (PTI) Swine flu death toll in the city, the worst affected by H1N1 virus in India, rose to 62 with one more casualty reported today.

The latest victim was a 27-year-old woman, Jayashri Kale, who died in government-run Sassoon Hospital, Dr Ashok Mehta, Joint Director, Health, told reporters here.

Meanwhile, six more educational institutions in and around Pune have reported fresh positive cases of the deadly virus since yesterday, officials said.

Maharashtra, the worst hit state in the country, has reported over 100 deaths till now.

PUNE: The H1N1 death toll in city rose to 64 with a 10-year-old girl and a 35-year-old woman succumbing to the influenza at the ICU of Yashvantrao
Chavan Memorial hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri.

Badar Para Mohammad Ali Kazi (35) from Kalewedi-Pimpri had developed flu-like symptoms on September 21 and was taken to private hospitals. On September 28, she was referred to the YCMH and her throat swab sample was sent for the testing at the NIV.

"Her condition was critical and she was put on ventilator," said Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services. However, she died at 7 pm on Wednesday.

The other victim, Pallavi Ranganath Vykode (10) from Shindenagar-Rahu died at the YCMH at 2.30 pm on Tuesday. Earlier, she was admitted to a private hospital, where she was given treatment for four days before being referred to the YCM hospital on September 27.

Mehta added that another person, suspected to have contracted the H1N1 virus, died at the Sassoon hospital on Wednesday at 6.30 pm. The 22-year-old woman from Uralikanchan was admitted to the hospital on September 29 in a critical condition and was put on ventilator. Her throat swab test report is awaited from the NIV.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, 7,849 people were screened and 11 tested positive for the H1N1 flu in then district on Wednesday. As many as 493 patients were administered Tamiflu tablets. So far, 1,274 people have tested positive in Pune.

As many as 74 patients were admitted to both private and government hospitals in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad on Wednesday, and 61 patients were discharged.

Mehta said that no educational institute reported new H1N1 positive cases on Wednesday.

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed two more lives, including a woman from Baramati, on Friday. The toll in the district has reached 66.


According to Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services, Kesarbai Dinkar Londhe (48), a resident of Malad village in Baramati, died at the Sassoon General Hospital at 11.45 am. Another victim, Vikas Laxmikant Pramanik (27), a resident of Somwar Peth, died at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital at 2 pm. "Both of them were H1N1 positive," said Mehta.

Londhe was admitted to a private hospital in Baramati a few days back. Later she was shifted to the state government-run Jubilee Hospital in Baramati. She was moved to the Sassoon Hospital on September 30 with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Another victim, Vikas Pramanik, a small-time goldsmith from Somwar Peth was referred to the Deenanath Mangesh Hospital from a private hospital where he had gone with typical swine flu symptoms. He got admitted to the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on September 30 .

Meanwhile, as many as 10 people tested positive for the H1N1 influenza on Friday. Around 6,851 people were screened across the district, of which 488 suspected patients were administered Tamiflu, said Mehta. Around 24,811 people have been given Tamiflu so far, added Mehta.

As many as 30 patients are presently being treated at the isolation ICU of various private and government run hospitals in PMC and PCMC limits. Of them, seven patients are critical. They are on ventilator, said Mehta. "As many as 49 patients were discharged on Friday," said Mehta.

PUNE: Three more deaths of H1N1 influenza, two 46-year-old women and a 28-year-old man, were reported in the city, taking the death toll to 69 on
Saturday.

According to Ashok Mehta, joint director, state health services, "All three have tested positive for H1N1 flu. Ramesh Malwe from Nasrapur village in Bhor taluka succumbed to the influenza at 7 am at Sahyadri-Munot hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on September 25 in a critical condition and was put on ventilator immediately after the admission."

He added, "The second victim was Sheikh Naseem Rafeek Ahmed from Kashidnagar in Pimple-Gurav died at the Ruby Hall Clinic at 8 am. She was admitted to the hospital on September 29 in critical condition and was put on ventilator."

Mehta said, "Jijabai Koli, a resident of Dhanore village, Alnadi, district was the third victim on Saturday. Koli, who was admitted to the Yashwantrao Chavan memorial hospital (YCMH) on September 28 in critical condition, died on Saturday at 3 pm. Earlier, she visited a private hospital on September 28 and on the same day, was referred to YCMH."

Meanwhile, two more schools in the district reported positive cases for H1N1 flu on Saturday. Mehta said, "A student each from Navmaharashtra Vidyalaya in Pimpri-Chinchwad and from a ahsram-shala in Junnar taluka tested positive. The health officials have visited both the schools while screening has been undertaken of the suspected cases."

Mehta said as many as 21 people tested positive for H1N1 flu on Saturday, taking the total number of positive cases to 1,322. There are 28 critical patients currently being treated for H1N1 at various designated government and private hospitals in the PMC and PCMC limits. Of these, 12 patients are put on ventilators.
Mehta said, "Around 3,009 people were screened at the centres across the district. Around 415 persons were found suspected and are put on Tamiflu."

On Saturday, around 67 people have been discharged after completing treatment, of which 10 were positive, said Mehta. He added that currently there are as many as 61 patients admitted at various hospitals in the city for the treatment of H1N1 flu.

PUNE: The H1N1 influenza claimed another three lives, including a man from Sangli district and an HIV positive boy, on Sunday. With this, the death
toll in the district has reached 72.

While two victims ? Madhukar Khote (45) of Hadapsar and Krishnadev Mahajan (35) of Walwa taluka in Sangli ? died at the Sassoon hospital, the five-year-old boy who was HIV positive died at the YCM hospital at Pimpri. All three were confirmed H1N1 cases.
Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services, said Khote was admitted to a private hospital in Hadapsar a few days back. He was moved to Sassoon on October 1 in a critical condition and was immediately put on the ventilator. He had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

PUNE: The H1N1 Influenza claimed three more lives in the city on Sunday and Monday, taking the toll to 75.


According to Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services, Sanjay Shyamrao Sapkal (35), a resident of Sakharwadi, Phaltan taluka in Satara, died at 6.25 am and Trupti Nanasaheb Magar (21), a resident of Nimgaon, Malshiras taluka in Solapur, died at 9.30 pm on Sunday. While Jyoti Ankush Pardeshi (45), a resident of Hadapsar, died at 6.55 am on Monday. "All the three had tested positive for the H1N1 influenza," said Mehta.

"Jyoti Pardeshi was admitted to the Sassoon hospital at 6.30 pm on October 3. She was critical at the time of admission and was immediately put on ventilator. She had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Besides, she was a diabetic," said Mehta. Pardeshi consulted a local medical practitioner in her locality a few days back. Later, she was admitted to a private hospital in Hadapsar for two days. She was referred to the Naidu hospital on October 2.

Sanjay Sapkal was admitted to the Bharati Hospital at 10.45 pm on September 24 on the reference of Satara civil hospital. His condition was critical at the time of admission. While Trupti Nanasaheb Magar (21), a resident of Nimgaon, Malshiras taluka in Solapur, died at 9.30 pm on Sunday. She was admitted to the KEM hospital on October 2. She was eight months pregnant. Her condition deteriorated following which she succumbed to the contagion, said Mehta.

Meanwhile, the first H1N1 casualty in the limits of Sangli-Miraj-Kupwada Municipal Corporation was recorded when Pratibha More (23), a resident of Miraj, fell victim to the infection at 12.45 am at Mission Hospital in Miraj on Monday.

More had developed typical swine flu-like symptoms a few days back. She consulted a local medical practitioner and was admitted to a private hospital in Miraj. Her condition deteriorated and she was moved to the Mission Hospital in Miraj on October 3. More was working as a lab technician at Bharati Hospital in Miraj, said Shekhar Rajderkar, dean of Miraj Medical College.

Meanwhile, three students tested positive for the H1N1 influenza in the limits of Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). Each one from municipal primary school in Pimple Nilakh, Angel primary school, Pimple Nilakh and Waghere Vidyalaya, Saswad tested positive. The health department initiated surveillance measures at these schools, said Mehta.

As many as 14 people tested positive on Monday. Around 1,065 people were screened across the district, of which 210 suspected patients were administered Tamiflu, said Mehta. Around 25,964 people have been given Tamiflu so far, added Mehta.

As many as 15 patients are presently being treated at the isolation ICU of various private and government-run hospitals in PMC and PCMC limits. Of them, five patients are critical. They are on ventilator, said Mehta. "As many as 28 patients were discharged on Sunday," said Mehta.
