UPDATE: County confirms one H1N1 case, university spokesman says
October 8, 2009 at 12:56 pm by Ted Bean, editor-in-chief

Update 10/8/09 4:55 p.m.: University Health Center Medical Director Peter Vellis e-mailed all students today, alerting them of the county?s confirmation. That message is posted after the jump.

    Update 10/8/09 4:06 p.m.:

The Albany County Department of Health has confirmed one case of H1N1 at UAlbany, university spokesman Karl Luntta said.

The university learned of the confirmed case just this afternoon. Luntta, citing privacy issues, declined to say if one of the student-athletes was the confirmed case.

Luntta said students experiencing flu-like symptoms are not regularly tested for H1N1, but are instead asked to take the same steps toward recovery as people who have the seasonal flu.

?The university has been vigilant will continue to be vigilant,? Luntta said. ?UAlbany has been preparing since last spring.?

Two UAlbany athletes have swine flu, spokesman confirms

Swine flu has hit the University at Albany athletic department. One men?s basketball player and one football player are being treated for the H1N1 virus, UAlbany athletics spokesman Brian DePasquale confirmed.

The athletes have the first two publicly confirmed cases of swine flu on the UAlbany campus.

DePasquale declined to name the athletes because of privacy issues. One was sent to his permanent residence, while the other lives off-campus, DePasquale said.

?The university knows about it. They have taken the precautions to not have them on campus one way or another,? DePasquale said. ?They are being treated and also steps were taken within our athletic department to to clean those areas where they may have been so that others do not get in contact with the virus.?

The football player with swine flu would not have played in this weekend?s game against Duquense regardless of whether or not he had swine flu, DePasquale said.

?It?s not someone who was in the mix at this point as far as playing,? DePasquale said. ?He was practicing but he wasn?t playing.?

Equipment was washed and locker rooms were disinfected and cleaned as a precaution against spreading the virus, DePasquale said. The trainers, equipment manager and doctors were all involved in the process of dealing with virus.

E-mail from Peter Vellis to all UAlbany students
    Dear UAlbany Student:

I want to provide you with an update related to our on-going surveillance and mitigation efforts surrounding H1N1 at UAlbany. The
University Health Center learned this afternoon from the Albany County
Department of Health that there is one confirmed case of H1N1 in our
    campus community.

As you know, the University has been preparing for possible H1N1 cases
since last spring. In addition to seeing students at the University Health Center with influenza like illness, we continue to monitor self-report submissions through the University?s H1N1 web site (www.albany.edu/H1N1). We have seen a slight increase in the number of students with influenza like illness over the past several weeks. It is
safe to assume that H1N1 has been in and around the community at large, both state and nationwide, for the better part of the fall and will
    likely remain into the spring.

I again encourage you to practice good respiratory hygiene, visit the University?s H1N1 Web site (www.albany.edu/H1N1), and if you?re feeling
ill, self-report through the H1N1 Web site.

I would also ask that you share this message with your parents/guardians.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact the University Health
Center with any questions at askUHC@uamail.albany.edu.

    Sincerely,

    Peter Vellis, DO
    Medical Director
    University Health Center
