WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (WIVB) - Niagara-Wheatfield school officials now confirm that a student's death on Monday was swine-flu related.

News 4 has learned that the Niagara-Wheatfield student that passed away was a high school sophomore. Now, the health department is saying that he had no known underlying medical conditions, making this case very different from previous H1N1 related deaths.

Niagara County had it's first H1n1 death a week ago, the victim? A middle aged man with underlying health problems.

Health Department officials say in this most recent case, the previously healthy teen had complications evolve from the H1N1 virus. Generally speaking, those complications are usually bacterial infections or pneumonia.

What signs should parents look for to know that the H1N1 virus is causing more serious problems?

"A child that has very labored breathing. Blue discoloration around the lips, nails. Blotches that suddenly occur on the skin," said Elaine Roman of the Niagara County Health Department. "A child is extremely irritable and cannot be comforted by any means. Extremely high fever."

News 4's Lorey Schultz is in Niagara County trying to find out more from the school district.

As for vaccination clinics, there is one on Saturday for residents in the Starpoint School District. Newfane's early child center will have a clinic on Dec. 11. The Lockport School District is scheduled for the end of January.
The health department says its working with all other school districts in Niagara County to schedule more clinics.

      NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. -

The Niagara County Health Department now confirms a teenager died from the H1N1 virus.

It's every parent's worst nightmare, the death of a child.

News 4 met with the boy's father, who told us that his son had been fighting the flu for nearly two weeks at Womens & Childrens Hospital.

Tears flowed easily when Pavel Nichiporuk opened up the family albums to show News 4 some photographs of his son, Paul.

      It's understandable.

His son died Monday from complications related to H1N1 influenza.

Paul's family is from the Ukraine, although the 14-year-old was born in western new york, and is the youngest of five.

He was a sophomore at Niagara-Wheatfield.

Today, his classmates expressed sadness, and fear.

Paul's father told News 4 his son was a healthy teen with no known underlying medical condition when he fell ill with the flu.

News of his death traveled quickly throughout the community.

One concerned parent, Michelle Fiorita, said, "You think your own are seemingly healthy so that's what's scary is I just hope I'm watching everything, you know?"

The teen's death is the second H1N1 related death in Niagara county.

Last week, a resident with an underlying medical condition also passed away."

Niagara Mounty Health Department's planning and information director Elaine Roman says there are signs parents should look for to know that H1N1 virus is causing more serious problems.

"If your child has influenza like illness and seems to be getting better, and suddenly gets severely worse, the fever spikes for his or her fever," said Roman.

"If there's blue coloration around the lips that child isn't getting oxygen.

Those are emergency signs," she added.

"I love him," is all Paul's dad wanted us to know at this moment about his son who will be laid to rest Thursday morning.

The Niagara County Health Department will be holding the first of several large H1N1 flu shot clinics this Saturday, November 21 at Starpoint Central.

      It will run from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

You only need an appointment if you stop by before 2 p.m.

I would imagine that they must have switched from Tamiflu to Relenza in this time period.

[JimO, do you have 7 confirmed deaths for Erie County?.....This is new to me....]

A 10th-grade student at Niagara Wheatfield Senior High School died Monday night of complications from swine flu, the Niagara County Health Department confirmed Wednesday.

Also, a junior at Buffalo’s Hutchinson- Central Technical High School died in a local hospital overnight Tuesday. School officials declined to say if his death was related to swine flu.

The Niagara Wheatfield student’s death is the second confirmed in Niagara County from the swine flu virus. A middle-aged man from the eastern part of the county died last week.

In all, Erie County has seven confirmed swine flu deaths, four children and three adults, Health Department spokesman Kevin Montgomery said.

“Obviously, there’s a great sense of loss,” said Niagara Wheatfield Superintendent Carl Militello. “Grief counseling was available Tuesday and will be all week, and the district will provide transportation to the memorial service [today].”

The student was identified as Paul Nichiporuk, the youngest of Pavel and Lidiya Nichiporuk’s five children. The family had moved to Wheatfield about seven years ago from the Sweet Home School District, said Paul’s 27- year-old sister, Elena.

Paul turned 15 in July, liked being outdoors and playing video games, Elena said.
“He was a regular, typical teenager,” she said.

He spent two weeks and two days in Women & Children’s Hospital before the family decided to take him off life support, Elena said.

He initially had a fever of about 102 or 103 for about two days. His parents called the doctor’s office and were told to come back in 10 days if the fever didn’t break, she said.
When his father saw his son’s fever wasn’t going down, they took him to the hospital Oct. 30. He was admitted into the pediatric intensive-care unit about six hours after he arrived.

Things got worse for Paul over that first weekend, Elena said, and his health took a slow, downhill course.
She said her brother was put on a machine that would add oxygen to his blood. He was eventually diagnosed with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.
Elena told The Buffalo News her brother’s initial test for H1N1 flu came out negative. It was not until the 11th day of his illness that doctors found out he really had a case of swine flu.

Little by little, Paul’s kidneys failed, his liver was failing, and his heart was weakening, doctors told the family. If he did recover, he would have to spend months or years on a respirator.

“It’s not a life that you would have wanted for him,” Elena said doctors told them, “or that he would have wanted for himself.”

Another brother, 21-year-old Sergey, said Paul liked to use his digital camera to take pictures in the backyard.
Paul’s 25-year-old brother, Gennadiy, serves in the Navy and Wednesday night was on his way back to the area from Chicago.
Services for Paul will be at 10 a. m. today in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda.
Niagara Wheatfield officials have been meeting with the Health Department about setting up a flu clinic like the one set for Saturday at Starpoint, the first school clinic in the county.
Militello told the School Board at its Wednesday night meeting that he has talked about setting up a clinic for two days the week of Feb. 15 for those 5 to 18 years old. However, nothing has been scheduled yet.
Starpoint was chosen as the site for the county’s first vaccination clinic because its superintendent, C. Douglas Whalen, was the quickest to respond to the county’s overtures.
Erie County decided to move almost all of its vaccine to private health care providers. Montgomery said the Erie County Health Department won’t organize clinics until it’s satisfied that as many people as possible have been immunized privately.
But a national shortage of supply remains a factor, Montgomery said. The private providers have about 479,000 doses on back order, and the Health Department itself is awaiting another 43,000.
Niagara County has received about 8,000 doses of swine flu vaccine and is holding on to most of it for the school clinics and its own clinics. About 10 percent of the total has been sent to pediatricians, said Niagara County Health Department spokeswoman Elaine Roman.
The next school clinic in Niagara County is Dec. 11 at the Newfane Early Childhood Center. Lockport will come next, with tentative dates of Jan. 29-30.
Roman said the county is offering small daily vaccination clinics and has made vaccine available to some pediatricians.
Niagara County’s clinics are by appointment only at the Trott Access Center in Niagara Falls. The number to call is 278-1903.

I never saw this one, but I have not been tracking deaths by county in New York. I'm trying to sort it out and will post my findings this evening.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT: County investigating possible second swine flu death
                Staff Reports
                Niagara Gazette

Niagara County health officials are investigating another suspected death related to the H1N1 flu virus.

Public Health Director Dan Stapleton confirmed Tuesday that his office is taking a closer look at a case involving an individual who may have died from complications related to the virus commonly called the swine flu.

Stapleton said the case involved the death of a local teen, but could not disclose any more information on Tuesday. He added the health department does expect to release additional information about the case today.

?All I can confirm is that there has been a death of a teenager from Niagara County,? Stapleton said.

Niagara-Wheatfield School District officials confirmed the death of a 10th-grader at the high school but said they have received no confirmation the death was H1N1-related.

?It is a tragic loss to the Niagara-Wheatfield family,? Superintendent Carl Militello said Tuesday night.

The health department confirmed the first H1N1 related death in the county last week. Officials said the virus contributed to the death of an eastern Niagara County resident who had underlying health problems.
