CHARLESTON ? West Virginia health officials are cautiously hopeful about a steady decline in swine flu cases even as traditional flu season is about to begin.

State Health Officer Dr. Cathy Slemp said Monday that cases of H1N1, or swine flu, are continuing to drop from autumn highs.

The state has seen just over 2,000 cases a week since late November, compared to more than 13,000 a week in late October.
Slemp says 512,000 doses of the swine flu vaccine have been distributed across West Virginia.

Despite the hopeful signs, she says the flu is unpredictable. Slemp wants residents to get vaccinated and continue personal hygiene measures like frequent hand-washing.

To date, the deaths of 20 West Virginians have been linked to swine flu.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."
