  • Shanghai: Swine-flu jabs all done

THE city has given all its planned 3.1 million swine flu inoculations without any severe adverse reactions, officials from Shanghai Health Bureau said yesterday.

The vaccination program for seasonal flu shots, meanwhile, is in full swing. The hope is to cover 3 million people before the start of World Expo, whose personnel will receive the injection to help prevent and control infectious diseases.

Since mid-December, some 1 million people have received the seasonal flu shots.

"Swine flu is in low prevalence in China and we shouldn't have a nationwide outbreak, but there is the possibility of small-scale outbreaks in places with dense population," said Xu Jianguang, director of Shanghai Health Bureau.

Shanghai health authorities have completed a work plan covering all infectious diseases that could take place in the world during the Expo between May and October.

"Training documents on 15 highly risky imported infectious diseases have been distributed to all local city- and district-level hospitals," Xu said.

Officials added that they have completed plans for such potential public-health emergencies inside the Expo zone as plague, heatstroke and drinking-water pollution.
