  • FAO strengthens the emergency preparedness for avian influenza outbreaks

(KPL) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supports the emergency preparedness for so called Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreaks in nine provinces in Lao PDR: Phongsaly, Luangnamtha, Oudomxay, Luangprabang, Xiengkhuang, Vientiane province, Vientiane Capital, Savanakhet and Champasak.

According to the press release from FAO on 7 April, the Forestry and Agriculture Office in each of the selected provinces will in 2010 undertake active surveillance to determine if the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus is circulating in the duck population focusing on live bird markets, highly concentrated duck areas, and mobile duck flocks.

?The reason why the active surveillance focuses on ducks is because healthy looking ducks may be acting as ?silent? reservoirs for the Avian Influenza virus?, explains Dr. Tri Naipospos, Chief Technical Adviser for the FAO project. ?In most of the surveillance studies carried out in the region, we find Avian Influenza virus in what look like healthy duck populations.?
