Fort Collins authorities are investigating the relationship of three confirmed cases of meningococcal disease, a potentially fatal infection that killed a 20-year-old man on Monday.

Tests from a fourth case are pending. All four have occured in Fort Collins in the past two weeks.

"It's so rare in Larimer County that many years we don't have any cases, and in years we do it's usually just one," said Jane Viste, a spokeswoman for the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment.

"And now we have the possibility of four cases in two weeks."

She said she could not name the person who died. None of the cases so far have involved relatives or obvious relationship...

Larimer County has seen enough cases of meningitis in the last three weeks to consider it an outbreak, Dr. Adrienne LeBailly said at a press conference this afternoon.

Three cases of invasive meningitis have been reported in the last three weeks, one of which killed Brian Wormus, a 29-year-old father of two.

The first case occurred over Memorial Day weekend in a 21-year-old male CSU student. He was treated at Poudre Valley Hospital and transferred on an undisclosed date to a hospital in Lakewood. His condition is unknown.

On Monday three people with symptoms of meningitis were reported; two of whom tested positive for bacterial meningitis; one of which was viral meningitis that was unrelated, LeBailly said.

The two confirmed cases both played hockey in Fort Collins on June 9 at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins. On June 12, one of the patients also played in a pick-up hockey game at Northern Colorado Ice Center in Windsor.

LeBailly said there is a risk of exposure and the health department is asking anyone who played in the pick-up game in Windsor to contact the health department at (970) 498-6700...

FORT COLLINS - Another case of bacterial meningitis in the Fort Collins area has left a fourth man in critical condition, the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment said.

The patient being treated was also part of the two hockey teams in the adult league that played at the Edora Pool and Ice Center on June 9 at about 7:15 p.m.

On June 12, the unidentified patient had left for a family vacation to Montana. According to Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, director of the Larimer County Health Department, he apparently began to feel ill on June 16.

He was taken by his family to a small hospital Thursday evening and was then transferred to a larger hospital by ambulance. He is now in intensive care and in critical condition.

"This is such a tragic situation," she said. "We will continue to follow up on our investigation and treatment of contacts so that we can try to prevent further meningococcal illness."

Since Memorial Day, there have been four confirmed cases of meningococcal meningitis in Fort Collins residents...

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State Health Department is investigating whether a Fort Collins meningitis outbreak that killed one hockey player and put two others in the hospital is connected to a case involving a CSU student and other cases in the Denver metro area.

If the cases are related, Larimer County Health Department Director Adrienne LeBailly said a broader immunization campaign may be in order...

LeBailly spoke Sunday night to a group of hockey players at EPIC arena in Fort Collins.

Some players have decided to sit out because of fear they might contract the disease...

Another meningitis case confirmed, but unrelated to outbreak

A man who fell ill with meningitis-like symptoms on June 14 and was thought to have had an unrelated and possibly viral form of the illness has been confirmed to have had bacterial meningococcal disease, Larimer County Department of Health and Environment officials said Thursday.

The man, known as ?Patient 4,? was treated at the Poudre Valley Hospital emergency room the same day as Fort Collins Adult Hockey Association players Brian Wormus, who died that day of a blood infection caused by meningococcal disease, and Nick Smith, who died on Tuesday, Health Department Director Adrienne LeBailly said...
