• For the week ending 11/13, there was one additional influenza-associated hospitalization confirmed. A cumulative total of 3 hospitalizations from three counties have been confirmed this season.
• Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area remained at a relatively low level (0.8%.
• Sentinel hospital labs (15/17 reporting) tested 201 specimens and 0.5% were positive. There were three additional specimens (out of 23 submitted) that tested positive for influenza A (H3) by PCR at the state laboratory and cumulatively 10 (91%) of 11 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3. The vast majority of specimens being submitted to the state laboratory for PCR testing are still not confirming by PCR.
Week 46:

? Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area remained at a relatively low level (0.7%). Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County remained at 0%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (16/17 reporting) tested 219 specimens and 1.8% were positive. There were three additional specimens (out of 13 submitted) that tested positive for influenza A (H3) by PCR at the state laboratory and cumulatively 14 (93%) of 15 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3. The majority of specimens being submitted to the state laboratory for PCR testing are still not confirming by PCR.
Week 47:
? For the week ending 11/27, there were two new influenza-associated hospitalizations confirmed, one from the current week and one from a previous week, bringing the cumulative total to 5 hospitalizations from 4 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area continues to be below 1.0%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County remained at 0%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (16/17 reporting) tested 233 specimens and 4.3% were positive. There were four additional specimens (out of 14 submitted) that tested positive for influenza A (H3) by PCR at the state laboratory and cumulatively 19 (95%) of 20 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3. The majority of specimens being submitted to the state laboratory for PCR testing are still not confirming by PCR.
Week 48:
? For the week ending 12/04, there were three new influenza-associated hospitalizations confirmed, two from the current week and one from a previous week, bringing the cumulative total to 8 hospitalizations from 4 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area increased slightly but continues to be below 1.0%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County remained at 0%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (15/17 reporting) tested 243 specimens and 4% were positive. There were seven additional specimens (out of 14 submitted) that tested positive for influenza A (H3) by PCR at the state laboratory and cumulatively 32 (94%) of 34 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3 (only one has confirmed as type B).
Week 49:
? For the week ending 12/11, there were five influenza-associated hospitalizations reported
bringing the cumulative total to 14 hospitalizations from 6 counties, all in the Denver-Boulder

metropolitan area remained below 1.0%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County

? Sentinel hospital labs (15/17 reporting) tested 262 specimens and 9.2% were positive. There
were ten additional specimens (out of 18 submitted) that tested positive for influenza by PCR
at the state laboratory. Of these, nine were influenza A (H3) and one was influenza B.
Cumulatively, 49 (94%) of 52 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3, one (2%) as
H1N1 and two (4%) have confirmed as type B.
Week 50:
? For the week ending 12/18, there were 8 influenza-associated hospitalizations reported
bringing the cumulative total to 29 hospitalizations from 11 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder
metropolitan area remained low at 1.0%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County
remained at 0%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (17/17 reporting) tested 305 specimens and 5.6% were positive
(88% for Type A). There were 20 additional specimens (out of 35 submitted) that tested
positive for influenza by PCR at the state laboratory. Cumulatively, 84 (92%) of 91 PCR
positive specimens have subtyped as H3, two (2%) as 2009 H1N1, and four (4%) have
confirmed as type B.
Week 51:
Synopsis: Influenza activity continued to increase gradually.
? For the week ending 12/25, there were 16 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported, 12 from the current week and 4 from a previous week, bringing the cumulative total to 45 hospitalizations from 13 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness level reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area remained low at 0.9%. Influenza-like illness reported by Mesa County increased slightly to 0.2%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (16/17 reporting) tested 308 specimens and 10.7% were positive (88% for Type A). There were 38 additional specimens (out of 52 submitted) that tested positive for influenza by PCR at the state laboratory. Cumulatively, 132 (91%) of 145 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3, 6 (4%) as 2009 H1N1, and 6 (4%) have confirmed as type B.
Week 52:
? For the week ending 01/01, there were 20 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported,
bringing the cumulative total to 75 hospitalizations from 19 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness levels reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder
metropolitan area have been near 1.0% for the past 5 weeks. Influenza-like illness reported by
Mesa County remained low at 0.1%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (15/17 reporting) tested 450 specimens and 10.9% were positive
(98% for Type A). High positivity rates were reported from a number of hospitals in the Denver
metro area, El Paso County, and Larimer County. There were 40 additional specimens
(out of 50 submitted) that tested positive for influenza by PCR at the state laboratory.
Cumulatively, 187 (89%) of 209 PCR positive specimens have subtyped as H3, 9 (4%) as
2009 H1N1, and 11 (5%) have confirmed as type B.
Week 1:
Influenza activity continued to gradually increase. Although influenza A/H3N2 continues to be the predominant circulating strain, 2009 H1N1 and influenza B viruses appear to be circulating in increasing amounts.
? For the week ending 01/08, there were 20 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported
along with 12 additional hospitalizations for the previous week, bringing the cumulative total to
110 hospitalizations from 21 counties.
? Influenza-Like Illness levels reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder
metropolitan area have been near 1.0% for the past 6 weeks. Influenza-like illness reported by
Mesa County remained low at 0.2%.
? Sentinel hospital labs (16/17 reporting) tested 429 specimens and 12% were positive
(86% for Type A) compared to 11% for the previous week. There were 54 additional
specimens that tested positive for influenza by PCR at the state laboratory; of these, 87% were
type A and 13% were type B. Of the type A positive specimens, 77% subtyped as H3N2 and
23% subtyped as 2009 H1N1.
Week 2: Two adult deaths have been reported this season, one each from Adams County and
Jefferson County. The first pediatric death of the season (adolescent from Garfield County)
will be reported next week.
Influenza activity continued to increase and spread geographically. Although influenza
A/H3N2 continues to be the predominant circulating strain, 2009 H1N1 and influenza B viruses
appear to be circulating in increasing amounts.
For the week ending 01/15, there were 16 new influenza-associated hospitalizations reported
along with 11 additional hospitalizations for the previous week, bringing the cumulative total to
136 hospitalizations from 24 counties.
Influenza-Like Illness levels reported by Kaiser Permanente for the Denver-Boulder
metropolitan area have been near 1.0% for the past 7 weeks. Influenza-like illness reported by
Mesa County increased to 0.5%.
Sentinel hospital labs (17/17 reporting) tested 495 specimens and 14.3% were positive
(83% for Type A) compared to 12.1% for the previous week. There were 19 additional
specimens that tested positive for influenza A by PCR at the state laboratory. Of the type A
positive specimens, 74% subtyped as H3N2 and 26% subtyped as 2009 H1N1.
There were no influenza-associated outbreaks reported in the past week. Cumulatively, there
have been five LTCF outbreaks reported from 3 counties; Denver County (3), Baca County (1)
and Yuma County (1).
