Current influenza strains circulating in Florida are primarily influenza A H3, with some 2009 H1N1
and influenza B. Other viruses known to be currently circulating, potentially causing influenza-like
illness, include adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and RSV. RSV activity is currently elevated,
as is expected during the RSV season.

Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is low to moderate and increasing in many of our monitoring, systems. This week no counties reported widespread activity, and five counties reported moderate, 21 counties reported increasing influenza activity.
ESSENCE and ILINet ILI data are elevated compared to previous years at this time, especially in the southern regions of Florida.
Current influenza strains circulating in Florida are primarily influenza A H3, with some 2009 H1N1
and influenza B. Other viruses known to be currently circulating, potentially causing influenza-like
illness, include adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and RSV. RSV activity is currently elevated,
as is expected during the RSV season.
In week 48 an influenza outbreak was reported in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) in Palm Beach
County. Ten cases of ILI were reported among residents, and 4 among staff, with onset dates
between 11/20-11/26. Six residents tested positive for influenza by rapid test, other specimens
were not able to be collected. The SNF was advised of proper vaccination, testing, and droplet
precautions. There have been 2 previous outbreaks in the 2010-11 influenza season, in a long-term
care facility and a school, respectively.

For week 52 (ending January 1) there were:
190 deaths reported
Upper bound of 95% confidence interval for prediction: 182 deaths
Eight excess deaths
The majority of the deaths are in those aged 75 years and older.

There were four influenza or ILI outbreaks and one respiratory illness outbreak reported into EpiCom during week 1.
