A threat of spreading Influenza AH1N1

Ministry of Health warns that there is a threat of spreading Influenza AH1N1 in the island. The Unit of the Ministry states that all hospital staff is already kept on alert regarding this.

According to the Ministry sources 15 patients have been found from various parts of the island. They have been called over for treatment with fever and cold who were identified as Influenza AH1N1 patients following investigations.

The Ministry of Health makes a special request from the public to concentrate on medical treatment immediately if symptoms such as fever, cough, cold and headache are exposed.

All government hospitals countrywide have been asked to ready themselves for a possible outbreak of H1N1 influenza pandemic, with over 27 confirmed cases being reported in the country so far.
The epidemiology unit of the Ministry of Health has asked top officials of all Teaching, General, Base and District hospitals to be on the alert and prepare their staff to face a possible emergency situation, if the flu gets out of control.

In a circular to Directors and Medical Superintendents of all Teaching, General, Base and District Hospitals, Dr Sudath Peiris, acting chief epidemiologist, has stated that following the few confirmed cases of pandemic influenza reported through routine influenza surveillance, response activities to face a possible second wave of H1N1 influenza pandemic should be strengthened in the country. They should be targeted at the 20 sentinel hospitals identified under the avian/pandemic influenza preparedness project.
He has also warned health officials to be ready to accommodate a heavy load of patients with acute respiratory illness at all outpatient departments (OPDs) and increase surveillance at the OPDs to detect any possible cases of H1N1 influenza.

Nov 09, Colombo: The Epidemiology Unit of the Sri Lanka Health Ministry says that 35 patients infected with Influenza A/H1N1 have been identified in the island.

Of these patients, 23 have been identified from the country's most developed and most crowded district Colombo.

Investigations conducted into the first few patients has shown that none of them had any travel history confirming that there is an ongoing community transmission of the pandemic virus in the country.

The Epidemiology Department says the new cases may signal a second wave of the pandemic and requests the public to consult a physician if symptoms like, cold, fever, cough, sore throat etc. prevails for more than three days.
