Anderson Hospital restricting visitors after increase in flu cases

MARYVILLE -- Anderson Hospital is restricting visitors because of an increase in the flu.

Anderson has requested that anyone with flu symptoms such as a cough, runny nose or fever should stay off the patient floors. Access to the Pavilion for Women is restricted to immediate family only: parents, siblings and grandparents.

Anderson spokesman Natalie Head said the decision was a precautionary measure, which comes from a new policy put into place after the swine flu outbreak in 2009. Head said the hospital has seen a 23-percent increase at its emergency room during the week after Christmas and more than five positive flu tests came through its labs, which is its criteria for restriction of visitors.
