The Tohoku Expressway, Japan's main artery connecting Tokyo and the quake-stricken northeast, has reopened for the first time since the earthquake struck on March 11.
Only emergency vehicles had been allowed to travel on the 300-kilometer section of the expressway between Utsunomiya interchange in Tochigi Prefecture and Ichinoseki interchange in Iwate Prefecture. But the ban on regular traffic was lifted at 6:00 AM on Thursday....
Germany's Lufthansa airlines will resume flights to and from Narita Airport near Tokyo on Friday. The flights had been suspended after the earthquake 2 weeks ago.
Lufthansa flights were being re-routed to international airports near Osaka and Nagoya in central Japan, since the March 11th earthquake and nuclear crisis.
Lufthansa says it has considered safety and other factors in its decision to resume regular flight schedules....
East Japan Railways says it will resume full operations on the quake-hit Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train line between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori in about one month's time.
JR East resumed service between Tokyo and Nasu-Shiobara 4 days after the earthquake on March 11th. Service between Morioka and Shin-Aomori began again last week....
Full Tohoku Shinkansen Line services to be restored by late April
East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) said Monday that the Tohoku Shinkansen Line, crippled since the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, will return to full service from late April.
JR East officials said lessons from the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995 as well as the Niigata Chuetsu Earthquake of 2004 are helping the company to restore services much more quickly than in the past......
ISHINOMAKI, Miyagi--Braving drizzly weather, more than 200 quake victims lined up in front of an Aeon supermarket on Thursday morning that had resumed business for the first time since March 11.
The store opened at about 9.30 a.m., 30 minutes earlier than its scheduled opening time. It was believed to be the first large store to reopen in coastal areas severely damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
About 10,000 gas canisters, drinking water, instant noodles and other daily necessities for sale were displayed on the shelves.
