An official of the [Veracruz] state department of diseases
transmitted by vectors [el Departamento Estatal de Enfermedades
Transmitidas por Vectores] of the state secretariat of health [la
Secretaria de Salud], Fredy Mendoza Palermo, said: "We have had 5
deaths ... among which was one from West Nile virus encephalitis..."

[Unfortunately, this case was only mentioned in passing in a report
of various diseases in Veracruz. No details are provided concerning
this unfortunate patient or the time and place that the infection was
acquired nor the confirmatory tests used. ProMED-mail would be very
interested in receiving these missing details, since clinical cases in
humans in southern Mexico have not been reported in ProMED-mail posts
previously. Cases have been reported from northern Mexican states,
however (see ProMED-mail archives below).

The original article in Spanish is here; I cannot copy and paste it into the machine translator. The article does mention WNV, but I don't see any mention of five deaths, or a death from WNV. The only death I can find in the article is due to hemorrhagic dengue.
The ProMED post may be a translation error. The article does contain a phrase that I translate as "We have detected five different diseases (in vectors?), including dengue, Chagas, WNV, scabies, and most recently rickettsiosis", but not mention of any other deaths, nor any human WNV cases.
