Indore: Number of deaths due to tuberculosis in the city's biggest hospital -the MYH- has been more than three times in just first five months of 2011 as compared to last year. Health officials blame the alarming rise in the death figure to increasing pollution in the city over the last couple of years.
According to MY Hospital sources, out of 480 TB patients admitted to the hospital last year, 19 succumbed to the disease. This year, 67 TB patients died between January and May out of 262 patients admitted during this period.
District tuberculosis officer Dr Vijay Chhajlani said, "A couple of years ago the numbers of TB cases reported were between 3500 and 4000. Now it is between 4500 and 5000. Fatality rate in the cases is around five per cent."
