Antarctic research ship gives up reaching base
The Japanese icebreaker Shirase has given up trying to get any closer to the country's Antarctic research base due to impassable ice and snow.
....Officials say the icebreaker will head to an area near an Australian Antarctic observation base as scheduled.
Australia has asked Japan to send the Shirase to break the thick ice that is hampering the delivery of supplies to the base.
