SIBU: The state Health Department has disinfected a primary school and a nursery in Kuching recently following the detection of hand-foot-mouth-disease (HFMD) cases there.
State Health Department director Dr Zulkifli Jantan said they were now closely monitoring the situation in these facilities although the situation in the state in general was under control despite the number of cases having climbed to 68.
?The department has carried out disinfection at the primary school (three cases) and nursery (two cases). They are now operating as usual but we are monitoring them very closely,? Dr Zulkifli wrote in a statement received here yesterday...

HFMD returns: Sharp increase seen in number of reported cases
KUCHING: The state?s Health Department has declared an outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Kuching, Samarahan and Betong districts.
Its director Dr Zulkifli Jantan said there was a sharp increase in the number of reported cases, which nearly tripled to 609 between Jan 1 and Feb 14, from 213 cases in the same period last year.
He said Kuching detected 189 cases, followed by Bintulu with 73, Miri 51, Betong 48, and Sarikei 36.
?The majority of the cases seen so far were mild infections, with only 35 cases or 5.9% requiring hospitalisation mainly because of poor feeding.
?There were no cases with serious complications or death reported so far this year,? he added in a press statement yesterday.
Dr Zulkifli said the department?s sentinel surveillance had detected that the causative organism was a combination of EV71 and Coxsackie virus A16, with 90% of the patient samples testing positive of EV71...

Screen children for HFMD at gates, says health officer
MIRI: Day care centres, kindergartens and primary schools here are advised to start screening children at their gates to curb the outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).
Miri Divisional Health Officer Dr Faizul Mansor when contacted by The Star yesterday confirmed that there had been cases reported here and the number was rising.
?We hope that schools especially day care centres and kindergartens would start screening children at their gates. If any is infected they should tell the parents to get the child to a doctor for immediate treatment,? he said...

HFMD cases in Sarawak heading towards outbreak
PETALING JAYA: The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Sarawak is showing an upward trend and heading towards an outbreak, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.
He said the accumulated number of such cases for the first seven weeks of this year was 806, compared to 213 cases during the same period last year.
?It is not an outbreak yet but it is moving towards that direction,? he said after launching the Taman Medan Health Clinic here yesterday...

Kuching is HFMD ?hotspot? so far this year
KUCHING: More than half of all hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) recorded this year were reported here.
According to the State Health Department?s weekly crisis highlight, 204 new patients were diagnosed with HFMD between Feb 12 and 18. This makes week seven of this year, as the one with highest number of new HFMD patients recorded in recent years.
Out of the total, 91 new HFMD patients were from the state capital, followed by 29 new patients in Bintulu during the week. In terms of disease clusters, 18 clusters were detected throughout Sarawak in the week...

Tuaran: The public have been advised not to panic over the outbreak of the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in Sabah which saw the temporary closure of at least six nurseries in Penampang last week.
Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said although the number of HFMD cases had increased to 149, the outbreak was under control.
"Don't panic. What is important is to follow the advice and steps recommended by the Health Department," she told reporters after opening the Taman Sri Rugading 1Malaysia Clinic, near here, Thursday.

150 new HFM disease cases in Sarawak
KUCHING: As of yesterday, 24 primary schools, kindergartens and childcare centres have been ordered to close by the Sarawak Health Department because of the hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak.
