A major health response is under way after an Air New Zealand plane landed at Auckland Airport with children with flu-like symptoms on-board.

A group of 60 passengers arrived into Auckland off NZ90 from Narita, Tokyo, this morning with the symptoms.

Air New Zealand is following public health procedures and has advised the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.


The Boeing 777-200 has 274 passengers on-board, and no-one has been allowed to exit the aircraft.

Ambulance communications said a quarantine area has been set up on the aircraft.

Two crews are on the plane and are wearing personal protective gear.

A witness at the scene said the Manukau District Health Board workers are wearing boiler suits and face masks and are assembled by the new police station next to the domestic terminal with Ambulance.

Ambulance services are also set up to transport passengers if required.

One person, who tweeted that they have been on-board the plane for 30 minutes and claimsauthorities are "stuffing about".

Meanwhile, an influenza epidemic is spreading across Japan, doubling the number of cases per hospital, The Mainichi Daily News reported.
Over 90% of the cases are due to the Hong Kong influenza A virus subtype H3N2, the report said.

Google flu trends also shows that the virus is peaking in Japan.

Initial reports said the sick passengers were New Zealand children returning home from a school trip, but the St John spokesman said that had not been verified.

A major health response is underway after a group of 60 people on a flight from Japan arrived at Auckland Airport with flu-like symptoms.
Air New Zealand said the people were among 274 passengers that arrived on flight NZ90 from Narita, Tokyo this morning.
They were on board a Boeing 777-200.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service had been notified, in line with public health procedures, the airline said.

The medics are assessing the passengers to decide how they will be treated.

The plane landed from Tokyo at 9.20am and St John ambulance staff were alerted by Aviation Security Services.

An Air New Zealand flight has landed in Auckland with several children on board displaying flu-like symptoms.
The NZ90 flight arriving from Narita, Tokyo landed in the city this morning carrying a group of 274 passengers, with 60 of those on-board taking ill.

Japan is currently experiencing a major flu epidemic.
News agencies report that by February 5, more than 2.1 million people in Japan had the flu. That had jumped by 380,000 cases on the previous week.
The number of people seeking medical treatment exceeded that during the peak of the swine flu outbreak in 2009, and authorities are warning the current epidemic has yet to peak.
The data shows that most patients tested were found to have been infected by the A strain of the virus, known in Japan as the "Hong Kong" strain.
Air NZ spokeswoman Marie Hosking said they were not planning any increased checks or screening measures for other passengers coming from Japan.
She said it was not yet confirmed that today's passengers were suffering from the flu.
Any planning would be left in the hands of Auckland public health officials.

An Air New Zealand Boeing 777 flight from Narita airport in Japan is quarantined on the tarmac of Auckland airport this morning as paramedics in protective suits assess the conditions of 73 passengers shown flu-like symptoms.
Many of those affected are reported to be part of a school group returning from a trip to Tokyo.
Regional hospitals have been placed on alert, as have ambulance services, and protective breathing masks are being distributed at the airport.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said it was unlikely the passengers had contracted anything worse than normal seasonal flu.

"We've been briefed on the situation, and advised that it is Japan's flu season, and there are no reports of new strains of flu there. We're keeping a watching brief but have been told there's nothing to suggest it's anything other than seasonal flu."
