With the mosquito-borne disease, Japanese encephalitis, fast spreading its wings, a wary Government has identified 62 more new districts to be covered under its ongoing vaccination immunisation programme in the next two years.
Currently, the programme covers 135 districts, majority of them being in Uttar Pradesh, where the disease claimed over 300 children and infected 4,480 people in 2011, double than the previous year.
However, in a relief to UP, no new district has been added to the Health Ministry?s lists for the year 2012-13 (Phase I) and 2013-14 (Phase 2) for the JE campaign.
...
Clearly, the programme is yet to deliver the desired results. In fact, after claiming over 500 lives in Uttar Pradesh, the deadly disease is now picking up preys outside the State. Delhi and Chandigarh are the latest to report cases of the viral infection.
?Hence, Northwest and North districts in Delhi and Sangrur and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar in Punjab have been included in the campaign for JE to be conducted in 2013-14,? said a senior health ministry official.
Besides, Bihar is also emerging as a vulnerable State for the disease. At least, 18 districts such as Patna, Bhagalpur, Nalanda, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Buxar, Darbhanga, Saran and Banka have been zeroed in for vaccination programme during two years between 2012 and 2014.
As a preventive step, re-vaccination campaign will be conducted in the five districts from Bihar in 2012-13, the official added.
