    First Human Case of West Nile Virus of 2012 Reported in LA County
    Reminder to all residents to take precautions against mosquitoes

    LOS ANGELES - The first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2012 has been reported in the county. The middle-aged adult, who lives in the San Gabriel Valley, was hospitalized for a short time earlier this month and has other chronic health conditions not related to WNV. The patient is now home and expected to recover. West Nile virus is passed to people through the bite of an infected mosquito; mosquitoes obtain the virus by feeding on infected wild birds. The Los Angeles County Health Officer would like to remind all residents to take precautions against mosquito bites...

      FRIDAY, 03 AUGUST 2012 14:02 LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTS
      An 88-year-old woman from Kern County is the first reported fatality from West Nile Virus this year, state health officials reported Friday.
      ?This unfortunate death reminds us that we must protect ourselves from mosquito bites to prevent West Nile Virus and other mosquito born infections,? said Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health.
      An increase in West Nile Virus activity has occurred this year compared to last year, Chapman added.
      To date in 2012, 100 human cases of West Nile Virus from five California counties have been reported. Last year at this time there were seven human cases and no deaths. During all of 2011, 159 human cases and nine fatalities were reported.

              MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

              An elderly woman has died of the West Nile virus in Merced County, health officials announced Thursday morning.

              This is the first West Nile-related death in the county this year.

              The Merced County Department of Public Health says so far, four other human cases have been reported in the county; all of those people recovered.

              This is the fourth death in California this year. Last month, a woman in Fresno County died from the virus...

                        There were 34 new WNV human cases reported in California this week from the following counties: Butte (2), Fresno (1), Glenn (1), Kern (1), Los Angeles (16), Merced (3), Orange (5), Riverside (1), Sacramento (1), San Diego (1), Stanislaus (1), and Yolo (1). This is the first indication of WNV from San Diego County this year.

                        Ten WNV-related fatalities have been reported to date in Fresno (2), Glenn (1), Kern (1), Los Angeles (2), Merced (1), Placer (1), and Sacramento (2) counties. A total of 41 WNV-positive blood donors have been reported this year.

                        216 human cases from 27 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2012.
