Florida 2012-13 Season: Weeks 41-40 (No New Pediatric Deaths; Total Nine)
Week 41: Sporadic
ED visits for ILI (above last two seasons for week 41) reported at 2.3%, a slight increase from last week.
ILI 1.5% (above last two seasons for week 41)
Moderate activity reported for Alachua, Levy and Orange counties.
30.9% positive for influenza (majority B), increasing from last week's 20.6%
ED visits for ILI (above last two seasons for week 42) reported at 2.3%, a slight increase from last week. ILI levels in some regions are above expected levels for this time of year. The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI have been seen in Regions 2, 3 and 5.

Moderate activity reported for Alachua, Franklin, Gilchrist, Levy, Orange and Putnam counties.
38.1% positive for influenza (majority B)
In week 42 there was one influenza or ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom.
• Lee County: Twenty students at an elementary school had ILI. Eleven students tested positive for influenza B by rapid antigen test. Six of the children had not been vaccinated. This is the only Lee County ILI outbreak in the 2012-13 influenza season.
ED visits for ILI (above last two seasons for week 42) reported at 2.3%, a slight increase from last week. The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI are currently in Regions 1 and 5. Four counties report moderate influenza activity in week 43 (Gadsden, Gilchrist, Levy, Orange). Alachua County reported one ILI outbreak in an elementary school into EpiCom in week 43.

31.1% positive for influenza (In recent weeks, influenza B has been the most common influenza subtype identified by the state public health laboratory.)
• Alachua County: Eighteen students at an elementary school had ILI. One student tested positive for influenza B by rapid antigen test. Another student tested rapid antigen positive for influenza A. Five of the children had not been vaccinated. This is the only Alachua County ILI outbreak in the 2012-13 influenza season.
ESSENCE-FL emergency department ILI levels in some regions are above expected levels for this time of year. The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI are currently in Regions 1, 2, and 5. Two counties report moderate influenza activity in week 44 (Gilchrist, Levy). There were no ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom in week 44 (two have been reported this season).
? In week 44, sixteen specimens tested PCR positive for Influenza B at the state public health laboratory (positive for all influenza: 31.4%). Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) activity is elevated above previous years at this time although recent increases are in keeping with seasonal trends.

ED ILI: 2.2% (Age-specific trends show that percent ILI in the 0-19 and 55+ age groups is increasing for week 44.)

ESSENCE-FL emergency department ILI levels in some regions are above expected levels for this time of year. The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI are currently in Region1, 4, and 5 . Three counties (Escambia, Leon, Levy) report moderate influenza activity in week 45. There were two ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom in week 45. The first was a lab-confirmed influenza A outbreak in a correctional institution in Volusia County and the second was an outbreak of influenza B in Hillsborough County elementary school.
? In week 45, eleven specimens tested PCR positive for influenza B, two specimens tested PCR positive for influenza A H3 and another two tested PCR positive for influenza A unspecified at the state public health laboratory. In recent weeks, influenza B has been the most common influenza subtype identified by the state public health laboratory. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity is elevated above previous years at this time although recent increases are in keeping with seasonal trends. l

The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI are currently in Regions 1 and 5. Six counties (Gadsden, Gilchrist, Jackson, Lake, Leon, Orange, Wakulla) report moderate influenza activity in week 46.
There were no ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom in week 46.
Week 47: Sporadic
ILI: 2.1% ( ILI increasing in the 64+ age group in week 47.)
ED ILI: 2.6% (ILI in the 20 to 55+ age group is increasing for week 47)
47.4% positive for influenza
Both ILI and ED ILI are tracking above the previous two seasons.
The most elevated levels in ESSENCE-FL ILI are currently in Regions 1, 2 and 5. Six counties (Escambia, Leon, Levy, Orange, Volusia, Wakulla ) report moderate influenza activity in week 47.
In week 47 there was one ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom.
? Jackson County: A correctional institution reported twenty-two inmates had ILI symptoms. One specimen was collected and tested PCR positive for influenza B at the state lab. All ill inmates are being treated with antivirals and all inmates have been isolated. Two more specimens have been collected and sent to the state lab. Results are pending.
Five influenza or ILI outbreaks have been reported into EpiCom in the 2012-2013 season.

? Currently, influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is increasing in all regions of Florida, which is normal for this time of year. Although influenza activity is increasing statewide, recent flu activity has been focused in North and Central Florida.
? The Panhandle and Central Florida regions are showing higher than expected ILI activity in emergency department visits for ILI, as monitored through ESSENCE-FL.
? Eight counties (Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Lake, Leon, Levy, Martin, Wakulla) report moderate influenza activity in week 48.
ILI: 1.9% (ILI visit counts are increasing in the 64+ and 5-24 age groups in week 48)
ED ILI: 2.5% (ILI in the 0 to 55+ age group is increasing for week 48)
44.4% positive for influenza (majority B)
Both ILI and ED ILI are tracking above the previous two seasons.

? Alachua County: facility for disabled persons reported residents and staff with ILI symptoms. Nine of the ten residents were vaccinated.
Week 49: Widespread

? In week 49 BPHL tested 57 specimens, and 43 tested positive: 21 for influenza B, 14 for influenza A H3, and eight for influenza A (not yet subtyped).

There was one influenza outbreak reported in week 50• Hillsborough County: An elementary school reported 21 students and three teachers with ILI. Six students tested rapid-antigen positive for influenza A and two tested rapid-antigen positive for influenza B. Of the eight ILI outbreaks reported this season, four have had confirmed influenza B infections

? Hillsborough County: An ILI cluster consisting of five elementary schools, one middle school andone private school reported 213 students and 18 teachers with ILI. Fourteen specimens tested rapid-antigen positive for influenza A, one tested rapid-antigen positive for influenza B, and six
tested positive for influenza of unknown subtype.
? Seminole County: A domestic violence shelter reported seven residents with ILI. No specimens were available for analysis.

In week 1, 2013 there was one ILI outbreak reported in EpiCom.
• Orange County: A nursing home reported 19 staff with ILI. One employee tested rapid antigen positive for influenza of unknown type. Vaccination status is unknown. Infection control measures were implemented; total 16 outbreaks for season.
For week 52 (ending December 29, 2012) there were:
•192 deaths reported
•Upper bound of 95% confidence interval for prediction: 211 deaths
•NO excess deaths.
The majority of the deaths are in those aged 75 years and older.
