    Disease kills Angolan cattle

Namibian communal farmers from Ohangwena Region who opted to take their cattle to Angola for grazing due to drought are said to have suffered a double blow following the alleged outbreak of unknown disease killing their animals in large numbers.

One of the affected farmers, Elias Naholo, told Informant? that the most affected areas are located in Angola?s Cunene Province, some 50km north of the Namibian border.

?We have reported this incident to the Angolan authorities at Omoongo wa Shuulilwa post but they could not do anything. The Angolan officials told us they have no means to deal with the situation unless assistance was forthcoming from Namacunde and Ondjiva,? Naholo explained.

Although Namibian and Angolan authorities could not confirm the outbreak of the disease, the cattle owners are adamant that their cattle are dying from an unknown disease. Said Naholo: ?The incubation period of the disease is between two to three days, starting with the cattle becoming feeble, and once skinned, the meat is reddish and bloodless, and the pancreas is swollen.?
