    Workers vaccinated against hepatitis A

    An Ashburton hospitality operator has vaccinated all staff against hepatitis A in a bid to curb the outbreak of the virus.

    The Ashburton Licensing Trust vaccinated 120 food handlers against hepatitis A on Monday after Canterbury medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey issued a recommendation to hospitality businesses to vaccinate employees.

    The bid to contain the outbreak has ramped up after a further two cases were confirmed on July 31.

    This takes the total of confirmed hepatitis A cases in Ashburton to 19 in the past three months.

    A minor outbreak in Christchurch this year saw 12 confirmed hepatitis A cases. All of the cases were confined to one family...

    An outbreak of hepatitis A in Ashburton could now have reached as far South as Oamaru, after three cases of the infectious viral disease were reported in Oamaru - but the source of the outbreak is still a mystery.

    Since May, about 20 cases of hepatitis A have been reported in Ashburton, and Southern DHB medical director and medical officer of health Dr Marion Poore said three cases of hepatitis A had now been notified from Oamaru to Public Health South in the past six weeks...

      Those eating out in Ashburton are being told to ask the hard questions to keep themselves healthy.

      The outbreak of Hepatitis A in the mid-Canterbury town has the Canterbury District Health Board preparing to hand out free vaccinations to toddlers from next week.

      However, kids aren't the only ones capable of spreading the illness.
