    The final monitoring in 2007 to uncover bird flu in Azerbaijan revealed absence of the virus, the State Veterinary Service at the Agriculture Ministry reported on 29 December.

    Monitoring commenced in Absheron Peninsula, Davachi, Salyan, Lankaran and Agjabadi on 17 December and completed on 28 December. Monitoring was held by a special commission consisting of specialists from the veterinary service at the Ecology, Health Ministries.

    During the monitoring, time blood samples and pathological samples of wild birds and poultry were examined, but the virus was not revealed, the same source stated.

    This year the State Service carried out 12 monitoring exercises. None of them revealed the virus.

    Prohibition of hunting, use and sale of wild birds in Azerbaijan still retains effect. All Azerbaijani border veterinary check points work with medium security in order to prevent spread of bird flu.

    The next monitoring of avian influenza in Azerbaijan will begin in mid-December, said Hanveli.
