I will admit that I'm hooked on soda -- drink it every day! The idea of going weeks/months without it is not acceptable so I started to search for a way to make my own. You could go the seltzer bottle/syrup route (and I'm getting a few as a back up and to whip cream) but I found a cool toy:

I love this unit!!! I purchased the seltzer setup since it was cheaper and then syrups. So far all the syrups have been good (diet cola, diet orange, diet caf. free cola). More diet rite tasting (but without the sharpness) than coke or pepsie. I have a shelf full of syrups to try yet.
Cons: Not a great shelf life -- most of my syrups had a 4-6month expiration date on them. There are several syrup companies out there.
Pros: If your soda goes flat - you just refizz it! Price was good at $100 for a basic setup. Also a cool toy to have on the countertop. Mine came from Soda Club USA.
I'm also looking to purchase a few old fashioned seltzer bottles with cartridges. If anyone has experience with those - please let me know since it's been 40 years since I've used one and I'm sure they've changed. I did notice that they seem to go thru cartridges with each liter they carbonate (ouch!)
