              11:30am Tuesday 10th January 2012 in News

              By Joanna Codd

ROYAL Bournemouth Hospital bosses have defended their infection control policy after cases of Norovirus were confirmed on two wards.
Poole Hospital suspended visiting on December 29 as a precaution after an increase in cases of the sickness and diarrhoea bug in the community.

But the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals only introduced visiting restrictions after the outbreak on wards two and five was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

Since then, ward 26 has also been closed to new admissions and visitors because of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Visiting in all other wards is restricted to next of kin.

No visitors are allowed to the closed wards with visiting hours restricted to all adult wards to 3pm to 5pm and 7pm to 8pm daily.

Operations have been postponed at a Cambridge hospital as staff deal with "intense pressure" caused partly by a rise in cases of norovirus.

Expert calls for action on norovirus

                              Senior News Reporter.

AN urgent review of hygiene practices in Scottish hospitals has been demanded by a leading health expert and opposition politicians in an effort to tackle the annual scourge of the deadly winter vomiting bug, norovirus.

Professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University, one of the UK's foremost bacteriologists, led the calls following the tragic case of a Fife husband and wife who died within four days of each other, with norovirus being a major factor.

Dorothy and Andy McEwen, from Dunfermline, both died aged 83. Mrs McEwen contracted the infection in the town's Queen Margaret Hospital and her husband caught the bug after taking home his wife's laundry from the hospital without realising the risk it posed.

An investigation by The Herald found only one of the 14 health boards in Scotland washes soiled clothing belonging to patients, with most others either offering verbal advice or handing a leaflet to family taking dirty clothing home which outlines how to handle it.

Scottish Government guidelines suggest providing written information to visitors regarding norovorus and handling laundry, but Professor

Pennington said verbal information is essential, especially when dealing with older people.

He also said health professionals are underestimating the highly virulent effects of norovirus, which he said is more infectious than MRSA and clostridium difficile.
