JAKARTA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A 30-year-old Indonesian woman from an outskirts city of Jakarta has died of bird flu, the health ministry said here Monday. Laboratory tests indicated that the woman, from Tanggerang city who died on Saturday in a designed-bird flu hospital of Persahabatan in east Jakarta, was positively contracted by avian influenza, an official of the anti-bird flu center of the ministry Djoko Suyono said.
"She was dead on Saturday. Two of laboratory tests showed that she is positive of bird flu," he told Xinhua.
The woman died after apparently coming into contact with over 100 poultry that suddenly died last month in her residence, said Suyono.
"The woman had contacted with dead chicken owned by her neighbors," he said.
The confirmation put total fatality from the H5N1 to 90 out of 112 contracted people in the bird flu hardest-hit country, said the official.
Both her child and niece who were suspected of having the disease, were cleared of the suspicion, he said.
The woman began to show the symptoms of the disease on Oct. 23 and went to clinics five days later in Tanggerang town, said Suyono. She was treated in a hospital in the town on Oct. 30 and was moved to Persahabatan hospital in East Jakarta one day later.
Expert fear that the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus can mutate into a certain level that makes it transmittable among humans, which can trigger a pandemic that is feared to kill millions of people.
Indonesia has been in the front row in fighting he viruses, which have slowly and persistently spread on human.
The country has faced major problems in its efforts to stop the spread of the disease, including large territory, traditional way of raising chickens on back yard and lack of implementing measures to stop the virus from spreading.
The virus has been endemic in poultry across Indonesia that is the world's fourth most populous country and home to millions of backyard chickens.

Indonesia confirms 90th bird flu death

        Agence France-Presse
JAKARTA - A 30-year-old Indonesian woman died at the weekend of bird flu, bringing the death toll in the country worst affected by the virus to 90, a health ministry official said Monday.
The woman came from Tangerang, a satellite city west of the capital Jakarta, where three children were diagnosed with the H5N1 virus last month. Two of them died.
"Both tests are positive," Suharda Ningrum, from the ministry's bird flu information center, told AFP, referring to the latest victim.
Two tests must come back positive before a patient is confirmed as having avian influenza here.
"Now the number of cases is 112, of which 90 have been fatal," Ningrum added.
The death toll in Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago nation where the H5N1 virus is endemic in nearly all birds, is the highest in the world.
Another official said earlier that the woman, who had come into contact with sick poultry near her home, had fallen sick on October 23. She was hospitalized in Tangerang on October 30 and transferred to a Jakarta hospital a day later.
A health ministry official said that authorities were coordinating closely with hospitals in Tangerang and had informed local health centers to be aware of the virus.
"They have been asked to do early diagnoses for any sick people who have any possibility of being infected with bird flu. This is important to avoid any other casualties," the official told AFP.
Erna Trisnaningsih, the ministry's director of control of animal-borne disease, said officials were coordinating with district leaders in Tangerang to boost prevention measures and public awareness.
These include "disseminating information to people to keep their poultry away from their house and regularly clean their chicken coops using disinfectant," she said.
Local officials have also been asked to cull poultry found in a one-kilometer (half-mile) radius of infected birds, she added, but it was not immediately clear if any culls were actually being carried out.
All birds other than licensed pets were banned from the capital Jakarta earlier this year amid ongoing avian flu outbreaks.
Transmission of the virus to humans is mainly by infected birds but scientists fear that H5N1 will eventually mutate into a form that is much more easily transmissible between humans, triggering a global pandemic.
The original source is thought to have been wild migratory birds.
H5N1 has mainly affected Asia and some parts of Africa, but the Food and Agricultural Organization warned last month that the virus could be transmitted to poultry in Europe by ducks and domestic geese seemingly in good health.
Animal health experts in Vietnam meanwhile warned last week that there was a high risk of a recurrence of the H5N1 virus there following several outbreaks in birds.

Bird flu kills one Tangerang resident

Multa Fidrus and Emmy Fitri, The Jakarta Post, Tangerang, Jakarta
A 30-year-old mother of two who died Saturday was confirmed by Tangerang's municipal health agency to be the latest human bird flu victim.
The housewife, identified as Eti, died at Persahabatan Hospital in East Jakarta, head of communicable disease prevention at the municipal health agency Lisa Puspa Dewi said.

The H5N1 virus also killed two children in Tangerang regency last month; 13-year-old Irfan who died on Oct. 13, and four-year-old Dewi Aprilianti who died on Oct. 22.
Lisa however, declined to comment when asked what the agency had done to curb the spread of the virus.
"We have taken steps, but it would be better for you talk to poultry breeders for confirmation because the virus allegedly contaminated the women through birds," she said.

Eti's body was returned home from Persahabatan hospital on Sunday evening and was immediately buried at the local cemetery.
Zaid, Eti's husband said his wife had run a high fever, with several symptoms including a cough, flu, sore muscles and throat, for more than 10 days.
"Her condition began to deteriorate on Oct. 26 and we rushed her to Usada Insani Hospital, the nearest one," he told The Jakarta Post.
Doctors confirmed Eti was suffering from the bird flu virus and she was then transferred to Persahabatan Hospital.

"She died at Persahabatan after receiving treatment. We were told that we were too late hospitalizing her," he said.
Syamsudin, Eit's younger brother said that before she contracted the virus, 10 chickens belonging to neighbors had died and their carcasses were not buried.
"They were thrown into a pond behind our house to feed catfish," he said.
In a separate case, a three-year-old toddler confirmed to have the bird flu virus was removed from Sulianti Saroso Hospital by his parents on Oct. 27. His health had improved a health worker said.

"We are still monitoring his condition, and so far so good," one of officers assigned by the Suka Asih Health Center, Darman, told The Post.
Achmad, the boy's father insisted on removing his child because he believed his son had recovered and there was no need for him to stay, Darman said.
The Health Minister's director general for communicable disease prevention and public health, I Nyoman Kandun, said the Tangerang case was one of problems that must be taken into account by health officials in curbing avian influenza.
"The public alone cannot be held to blame because they have diverse backgrounds including education," Kandun said.

Health workers and the poultry industry must be responsive to bird flu outbreaks, he said.
Data from the Agriculture Ministry showing avian influenza has been found in 31 of 33 provinces, Kandun said, means it is time to revamp the poultry industry.
"Tangerang ... is densely populated both with humans and with poultry. If there is intense interaction between humans and birds in one area, officials must be vigilant in detecting cases early," he said.

Since the first human bird flu virus infection in Indonesia, in 2005, it has killed 90 people -- the most avian influenza fatalities of any country in the world. It has attracted global concern and raised fears the virus may evolve or mutate into a disease able to pass from human to human.

Pihak keluarga Nabi pun panik melihat suhu badannya melebihi 38 derajat. Lantas, keluarganya pun berinisiatif membawanya ke RSUD Arifin Achmad, satu-satunya rumah sakit di Riau yang memiliki ruangan khusus isolasi flu burung.

Nabi tiba di RSUD, Selasa (6/11/2007) sekitar pukul 13.00 WIB. Para medis pun segera membawanya ke rungan isolasi flu burung. Tapi baru 5 menit menjalani perawatan, nyawa Nabi tak tertolong lagi.
